    FIXES:

    • Reverted "Plex Companion network handling changes avoid persistent connections" from 2.4.34 due to the errors it caused on PlayStation consoles. No evidence of it causing issues on Smart TVs but better safe than sorry.

    December 18, 2.4.41

We've got some treats baking for next week. In the meantime this is a TiVo only release. We're hoping this lands in time for you all to start the holiday off with plenty of classic shows!

    FIXES:

    • TiVo Bolt devices running the Fall 2015 update are able to again able to connect with Plex Media Servers. We corrected an issue which made non-secure connections to your Plex Media Server impossible.
      • The Plex app uses secure connections by default. Although, secure connections can be disabled by a server's "Network > Secure Connections" setting. Secure connections can also be prevented by home routers which disable DNS rebinding. The application now correctly falls back to non-secure connections to your Plex Media Server when secure connections are disabled or prevented.

    December 22, 2015, 2.5.1

The 2.5.1 release brought music lyrics support to Smart TV and TiVo devices. We held off on posting a message in this thread until our newsletter introduced the feature.

Unfortunately, it also brought a lot connectivity issues - especially for Vizio, Sony, and TiVo users. It's a funny thing: no matter what sort of testing we do, these Opera based devices always find ways to deceive us.

After users reported connectivity issues, one colleague was able to reproduce the issue on one device and only against the production release - our testing releases didn't show the same failure. Short of it? We'll bring music lyrics support back after the holidays and after we understand why many users were affected.

    December 23, 2015, rollbacks!

    We apologize for the troubles!

If your families are anything like mine, we've been using Plex to catch up on decades of holiday specials. We hope restoring the older releases will provide you and yours stable media playback for the holidays.

    • TiVo devices were rolled back to 2.4.41
    • All other Smart TV devices were reverted to 2.4.36

    February 17, 2016, 2.5.5

The 2.5.1 release and rollback left a really bad taste in our mouth and a lot of reports of user frustration. The parts of the application responsible for startup, connecting to Plex Media Servers, and managing user setting were thoroughly reviewed and improved. Along the way we added some highly requested features too.

    NEW:

    • Allow displaying lyrics when they're available for a track.
    • Search the current media server for music and videos.
    • Privacy > Usage Analytics setting enables users to opt out of application
      usage tracking.

    • Privacy > Network Logging setting enables users to send diagnostic logging to
      their Plex Media Server.

    • Manual server configuration enables direct IP and port access to Plex Media
Servers which are not currently signed into a Plex Home. Not available on
Vizio, Sony, TiVo, or other devices running the Opera SDK.

    • Watch Later or Recommended videos, movies, episodes, seasons, and entire shows
      can deleted.

    • Entire shows and individual seasons can be marked as watched or unwatched.

    FIXES:

    • Resiliency: Ensure application startup initialization functions as intended.
    • Resiliency: Server connectivity issues during startup are handled gracefully
and present detailed recovery information based on an analysis of the server,
      environment, and device configurations.

    • Resiliency: Improve Opera Cross Network protection workaround to avoid known
      bad situations.

    • Resiliency: Clear application settings on sign out.

    • User experience: Better recognition of casual presses to the Play button. If
there's something playable nearby we'll play it.

    • User experience: Fast forward (>>) and rewind (<<) can be used to paginate
      more quickly through lists.

    • User experience: Skip forward (>|) and skip back (|<) can be used to change
from any preplay or detail screen to its sibling.

    • User experience: Polish our selection of focusable items, modal presentation,
      and loading ... feedback.

    • User experience: Accept all key presses to non-repeating keys.

    • User experience: Improved photo player and video playlist interactions.
    • Plex Companion: Casting videos from a local PMS correctly uses Local playback
      quality setting.

    • Plex Companion: Many stability improvements for controlling smart TVs.

    • Channels: Unsupported or channels with errors present an error message inline.
    • Vizio: 4K televisions will allow direct playback of 10-bit HEVC video streams.
    • TiVo: requires MP4 be Web Optimized for direct playback
    • TiVo: handles to losses in network connectivity
    • Sony: Probable fix for scrolling error reported by a user on a device actually
      running Opera 11.

This is a stabilization release addressing user reported issues.

    NEW:

    • Updated translations.

    FIXES:

    • Fixed the Search icon missing for some users.
    • Fixed startup issues on Opera SDK devices primarily including Vizio and Sony.
    • Fixed trouble signing out on the same devices devices.
    • Fixed trouble automatically reconnecting to a media server when we display the Unable to Connect to <Server Name> screen.

    May 5, 2016, 2.6.3

We've added and improved several features while adding some device specific changes and fixes.

    NEW:

    • Mobile server support. Access videos and photos stored on your iOS, Android, and Windows Phone mobile devices on your Smart TV.
    • Cloud Sync support. Access media hosted on a variety of cloud hosting providers.
    • At long last, video and photo playlists are playable.
    • An optional 12-hour or 24-hour clock can be enabled in the Settings > Main dialog.
    • Reworked search integration for easier navigation into and out of Search.
    • Users with only Watch Later and Recommended online content can use the application without a server of their own.

    FIXES:

    • General: Improved handling of marking movies/shows/seasons/episodes watched or unwatched
    • General: Fixed empty screens displaying when viewing movie extras
    • General: TV devices will show up as available for casting from more mobile devices.
    • LG/General: We think squashed a bug which wreaked performance havoc on some devices.
    • PSX/General: Users with non-video-transcoding servers (NAS) can play transcoded music tracks.
    • PSX: Prevent application crashes viewing some premium music content.
    • PS4: Updated reaction to app being backgrounded.
    • TiVo: Remove the web optimized requirement for MP4 files. User feedback overwhelmingly suggests the change was - problematic for many users.
    • TiVo: Limit Series 5 Roamio and Mini running Opera SDK 4 TiVo devices to 720p.
    • Vizio: CNP safely accesses IP directly from Vizio system info.

    KNOWN ISSUES:

    • TiVo: We're working with TiVo on several playback issues on Series 5 and 6 boxes. Including:
      • Series 5/6: out of sync audio after seeking a transcode or direct stream.
      • Series 5/6: inability to direct play all MKV videos.
      • Series 6: inability to play UHD content.
    • Vizio: Some televisions have trouble playing videos hosted on Google Drive.
    • While many mobile device videos play well we have run into issues with portrait videos played landscape and some videos recordings which aren't compatible with some televisions.

    May 5, 2016, 2.6.4

    FIXES:

    • TiVo: Series 5 and 6 boxes running system software version 20.5.9 are presented a constrained video direct play profile. This system software is expected to support MKV direct playback although it is not. Additionally this system software is not supporting UHD video playback on Series 6 Bolt boxes. The Plex app now detects this system software and will avoid direct playing MKV and UHD videos. MKV videos which would have Direct Played on Series 5 and 6 will now Direct Stream. UHD videos which would have direct played on a Series 6 Bolt will now Transcode to 1080p. We've confirmed the next TiVo system software update addresses these playback issues. The Plex app automatically detects newer system softwares and re-enables MKV and UHD playback.

As some of you might have noticed, LG NetCast devices have been stuck on 2.6.9... until now! Our latest release fixes NetCast devices to bring them back in line with other devices. This release includes everything that NetCast missed in 2.7.5 and 2.7.11.

(Previously, NetCast had been held back because an update to a library that we use triggered a gnarly crash on NetCast devices. Message me if you're interested in the details.)
