Plex Stopped Playing MKV Files

judoka209judoka209 Members, Plex Pass Posts: 4 Plex Pass

Since yesterday, Plex won't play any MKV files on any Plex application be it web, mobile, or PS4. It will play nice with anything but MKV. I know for a fact I updated my Plex Media Server yesterday, but it wasn't playing before the update and it won't play now. Not even sure what to do. I tried uninstalling Plex Media Server and reinstalling but it didn't help. I'm at a loss.

Post your server log. Close the Plex server, start it, wait two minutes, open a client and play a file that doesn't work, wait one minute after the error, close the server and post the server log.

How to Stream MKV files to Plex

Solution 1: Adjust the whole file names. For example, if the names of mkv videos were kind of random. You can set 'Scanner' as 'Personal Video Files Scanner' and 'Agent' as 'Personal Media'. Plex picks up pretty much any file with that setting.

Cons: Large MKV files are stuttering on Plex.

Solution 2: Use Handbrake to convert MKV files to MP4 for streaming to Plex.

Cons: Some guys reflect Handbrake is spamware. Just downloaded it and had to do two malware cleans to get rid of all the **** it put on the computer.

Solution 3: The best option to open MKV files on Plex is to convert MKV to Plex compatible format MP4. Then all what we need is a reliable MKV to Plex MP4 converter, which is supposed to have no virus and advertisements, and no quality loss during the conversion.

First, the problem was not with MKV files, it was with the lack of transcoding space. Converting to MP4 is not necessary unless your client cannot accept the MKV container. This is not the case in this instance.

Second, I've never once had issues with Handbrake. Never had any malware/spyware installed along with it. Where did you get your copy? Perhaps you did not write this from personal experience, and you only copy/pasted from the article you linked? Handbrake has been around for over 10 years now, and it is most definitely not full of crapware.

Third, you can use many applications to change the container. VLC can do it, Handbrake can do it, etc etc etc. There is no conversion going on, because the contents stay the same, so it's a quick process.

I am having a very similar problem with Plex running on my Raspberry pi. It takes very long for Blu Ray MKVs to start, if they ever do and they don't run for long without pausing, often for several minutes.

Having Same issue but plenty of space on system

  • airic499airic499 Members, Plex Pass Posts: 23 Plex Pass

I'm running a PlexBuntu I3 with >200 GB free space on the Root drive and 8 G memory and a WIndows box with an high end I5 , 16G and over a TB free space on the C drive and a Docker behemoth with all but unlimited resources. So very sure it isn't space/resource constrained issue. All three have just stopped serving .MKV files? They all played fine until a month or so ago, so it isn't file, or the system hardware in general. I don't have noexec in my fstab on the Linux box and obviously the other is a windows box. I will have to check the Docker box, to see if that has the noexec issue, but it stopped working at the same time as the others, so it seems unlikely that alone is the problem?

So while I am sure resource constraints and noexec are legitimate issues, I am also sure they aren't the only issue. I was going to post the Windows box logs here, but oddly I don't see anything that looks like it tried to play the file? Probably just don't know enough about the Windows logging system, but I'll keep looking.

I did find it in the log. On the Windows I am getting the log below. So two errors, couldn't find the movie to stream which is weird. I can copy and paste that exact string into VLC and it plays fine. The error must have something to do with the
"There were not enough physical disks to complete the requested operation", but as I said more that 1 TB free on the C drive.

But as you can see there is a second error where the Transcoder isn't "found". So I think clearly two parts to the problem. Again, none of this was an issue until recently. I suspect going back to an earlier version for now is partially the answer, but can anyone offer any guidance there?

Could you restart the server and then try to reproduce the problem and attach a full log file - easiest option is to use the interface for zipping the logs

Are you using Optimized Versions ? That would convert to the D:\

And could you get directory listing for the D:\Video\Movies\Kids Movies\Cartoons\The Movie (2015)\
I presume it is an internal drive

Strange to get the disk space error message when attempting to check if the file exists

@airic499, the error "There were not enough physical disks to complete the requested operation" is very interesting. That makes me think that Plex isn't seeing the drive.

Yes, that's it. Thank you very much for setting me on the right track. I had the same issues as some people in this thread. Before that I had an issue that I didn't have enough room. I changed the folder for transcoding and then I was getting an issue that there was a problem playing this file. I simply did a chown on the new folder and it works perfectly.
