Watch Later "Video Unavailable" error on Plex for Roku

steve-holtsteve-holt Members, Plex Pass Posts: 14 Plex Pass

For the past week or so, whenever I try to play a YouTube video saved to my Watch Later queue with Plex for Roku while my computer running Plex Media Server is asleep, I get a "Video Unavailable" error, and it won't play. If I wake up my computer, the videos play without issue.

Previously, I never had issues playing YouTube videos without my server running since they didn't need to be transcoded, so this seems like a bug in the latest update. I'm running version 4.1.10.

I came here to post on this as well. Having the exact same issue.

"Video Unavailable — Sorry but we can't play this video. The original video may no longer be available, or it may be in a format that isn't supported."

However, I can still play older videos in my queue, so this is something recent in the last 4 or 5 days.

This could very well an issue with youtube (service integration), but we'll investigate.

Saved a few more videos to Watch Later - Plex app on Roku is still useless for videos saved in the last 5 or so days. However, I can watch any saved video from the web interface to my NAS just fine, and videos saved over a week ago play fine on the Roku. The issue seems to be restricted to the Roku, and started about 5 days ago.

Restarted the Roku numerous times, even completely disconnected it from power a few times to reboot, and still no luck. Next I'll try a factory reset of the Roku, though I'm not looking forward to having to set everything back up.

I just tried this on RARflix and Plex 8 for Roku (official). YT vid loaded via 'Plex It' link on Chrome.. moments ago. I get a similar response from both and it goes a little something like this:
The video tries to play, then fails, auto-loads itself again, then plays normally.
You guys must have the 'auto-reload-after-fail' setting turned off (yea, I don't have one of those either). I do note I'm not a Plex Pass subcriber (If that makes any difference).

Where is this setting? I'm having trouble finding it.

Keep reading it... it'll come to you.
I can only report what is, or isn't happening. @ljunkie may be able to glean some useful information from my post and that could be of some help.

There is no setting in the Roku channel to fallback to transcoding, it does it automatically, and it does work. The issue described in this thread (first issue) is that youtube uses to Direct Play, and now it's transcoding - i.e. it is falling back to transcoding to play, but this will not work if you don't have your server on, or if your server doesn't support transcoding.

I can confirm that it seems some youtube videos do require transcoding. I can also confirm it's not a regression on the Roku channel. The same watch later video from youtube that now requires transcoding, does the same thing in the older version, so it's more related to something with how the watch later videos are added/saved to the queue.

Yep, that's exactly what is happening - easily seen from the startup screen in RARflix (dots to start - direct play... fails, reloads... no dots - transcoding... plays fine).

The strange part is every single YT vid before the recent server upgrade direct plays and every single video after the upgrade transcodes.... with no exceptions.

(I knew you'd come in handy... lol)

Ditto. I regularly save videos from the same YT channels to Watch Later, and they always used to direct play. Now, Plex tries to transcode them all.

I noticed the YoutubeTV channel now transcodes videos on Roku too. Very strange since I'm sure they're just MP4s. They continue to direct play on fire tv and other Plex clients as well, so I think it may be something specific to Roku.

I can play Vimeo fine, but no YouTube. I'm not getting the fallback transcoding. And I usually can transcode anything. I'm on the latest Plex player (via Roku 4), latest Plex Server, & Latest QNAP 4.2.1 Beta OS.

  • GotVicGotVic Members, Plex Pass Posts: 15 Plex Pass

FWIW, the YT videos that fail through the Roku play/transcode just fine on my server.

Can any of you remove an affected video and re-add it? I am unable to replicate this issue now for new videos. If you are able to replicate this, can you link at least one of the videos that is failing?

Attached is a log from the YoutubeTV channel where the video fails to directplay and fallsback to transcode.

    This video transcodes on youtube:

    And this video direct plays:

Both still directplay on the Fire TV Plex client.

Yep, this looks like a different issue than before. We are actually able to attempt to direct play this one, but the Roku seems to fail while it tries to load the video.

I'll investigate this one, but definitely different than before. Still curious if anyone else can remove and re-add a video they recently tried to queue that failed and see if it's working now.

OK, here's one. I just deleted it from my queue & re-added it. No change. Thanks!

Thanks! @jbaconbits and @Tylast - It does look like this is a different issue than I had experienced when I first tested the issue, so it very well may be the original issue. From what I can tell so far, is that the Roku does attempt to Direct Play these videos, but fail and fallback to transcode. Previously the issue I was able to replicate, that seems to have corrected itself was that the videos required transcoding in the first play, no attempt to direct play at all. We will investigate this further. Thanks!

Update: I downloaded the source MP4 (720p) for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_894yZohfI. Added it to a local library and tried to play it. Guess what! It failed and continued to transcoding as a fallback. I remuxed the mp4 (copying the video/audio stream) and it works fine. The same thing goes for the Roku Media Player. It seems that the original source for 1080p/720p are not compatible with the Roku. Interesting enough, the 360p version is and works just fine.

We'll have to forward this file to Roku to see if they can fix it, but for now, it looks like it's possible that some youtube videos will require transcoding.

We will also continue to investigate the source file to see if we can identify the issue so help Roku fix it.

I think something must have changed in Youtubes transcode process for submitted HD files then, because files through that plugin have direct played fine for a long time. It's weird that then would fail to Direct play on Roku while working fine on other clients. The official Roku YouTube app seems unchanged as well.

Agree. You can also find videos that do work, but it may just be because they are older or haven't been re-encoded.

Not that weird. I'm sure you are aware that the Roku has different capabilities than other clients, and the official YT channel can use other formats or methods of delivery. Either way, I do agree that the Roku should be able to play these videos, but we don't have access to fix this issue, so we'll have to ping Roku to handle it.
