Synology DSM 6.1 with Plex and PlexPy (and Community Python 2.7.13)

CyberlexCyberlex Posts: 27Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Greetings All,

as for now, sounds like I should not upgrade DSM to the major new version 6.1, too severe changes in DSM to be a guinea pig and avoiding hassle. "Never touch a running system" so to speak :)

Also in the DSM 6.1 readme:
"Due to infrastructure update, packages will need re-initialization after upgrading to DSM 6.1. The process will occupy a higher CPU usage and can take up to an hour depending on the number of packages installed."

What does this mean for a big Plex library?

Anyone wants to share their thoughts or even experience with DSM 6.1 using Plex, PlexPy & Comm. pythton 2.7 (needed by PlexPy). Any Feedbacks well appreciated!

Thanks a bunch,
Cyberlex

    Thanks to all that answered!

Meanwhile I updated to DSM 6.1 and can confirm that Plex, PlexPy and community Python 2.7 run fine.

BUT what nobody tells you is that DSM 6.1 introduces a new pre-installed package called "universal search" which can't be removed and eats away 190-200MB memory.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

    Cheers
    Lex

    Hello !

Something near that question : Synology just release the DSM 6.1.
Trying to update, it tell me that it will disable Plex after install...
Is there a plan for a fix about that, please ?

PMS (latest version) installed on my Synology DS213j, so no transcoding possible.

@jomofcw there is a number of other topics on this matter. Proceed with your own risk. There are users reporting that update will pass just fine and that they have 0 problems. On the other hand Plex team is aware of this issues and are working on it.

Bottom line if you choose to ignore the warning its on you. There is a chance that everything will work just fine but then again it might not. Atm its your call.

Thanks everyone! I'll wait with the update until someone else goes through the hassle or I migrate all to a Docker Linux Image sounds like a rather good idea to loose dependencies respective minimize it to one, namely the Docker package.

    Cheers

    Hello @ChuckPA ,

You're right, it seems to be OK.
I just had to restart Plex after the upgrade to 6.1.

    Thanks !

    Hi,

I have the Synology DS916+. I was looking to add PlexPy to my device since I run a PMS. I've looked through the forums and internet, but every advice seems highly technical...I am not afraid to run command line, but was wondering if someone could guide me in the right direction that's simple enough for a beginner to follow? Here's one link I found below, but not sure if it's dated, plus it was a little hard to follow. Thanks in advance for any help.

Those instructions are very straight forward: Command by Command.

Don't know if it's dated.. You can always check the PlexPy forum for update just in case.

    I run plexpy in Docker.
    I have 4 versions running for 4 servers ( i don't run 4 PMS all the time)
Which is a bit of fidling but

    No command line required!

    Plex related : NAS Synology 1817+ & 1815+, 3x NUC (Skull i7, i5 & i3), Drobo 5N and 2 Nvidia Shields - 2017 and 2015 Pros
Client hardware used or using - Shield 2015 (pro and 16gb) and 2017 pro, ATV4, Xbox 360 and one, Fire stick and TV, windows PMP, Raspberry PI, Roku Stick and 3 and 4 plus several Android Phones and Tablets.

I give MY opinion from MY experience!

So much importance is put on the processing power of your PMS box.
I say equal or more should be put on correctly formatting and optimizing your media !

How do you run it in docker? Is there a good step guide? If I run PMS on my actual NAS, will running PlexPy on docker still work?

I wasn't sure if they're dated. And the way the instructions were copied and pasted made me wary.

I have the same exact setup (Plex on bare metal, and Py in docker) and everything works just fine.

Rightcode, in the link you posted, there is a .spk synology package for easy install linked in the 2nd to last message.

You must just first install another package. In the synology package center click "settings" then on tab "package souces" click "add". For location give it "http://packages.synocommunity.com", name anything you want.

After that you will have a new menu in package center on the left side "Community", there you can find and install "Python" (Not python 3). After that you can install the plexpy spk package with the button manual install also in the package center.

As stated here and I can add more!

I have Plexpy in docker giving me the stats(etc) of the Synology NAS PMS (where it is installed and not in docker), 2x windows 10 PMS, 2 shield PMS and a drobo PMS.

So I can have 6 plexpy(s) running in docker - but generally just the server/s I have running (usually 2 or 3)

All settings the same except the local port.
