What's the point of the cast pictures if half of them cut the actors face off?

Potato BobPotato Bob Posts: 4Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

So I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere if the devs are going to fine tune this or what but I think they need to.

Before I get into the problems I'd just like to say that while I do know quite a few actors by their names, I know many many more by their face. So when I saw that the new update had a cast section with pictures I thought I'd be pretty cool.

Except two big problems.

First and foremost, I'm not sure how many shows or movies have this problem but it seems like a lot of mine show pictures where the actor is either far away or their face is cut in half or both. Which means the picture is useless.

Example.

Secondly, and I'm sure the people who put this feature together probably spent a lot of time making this work, the actors shouldn't be in character in their pictures. I don't know about you but sometimes I'm a little surprised to find out which actor plays a certain character because the character looks nothing like the actor. So giving me a set of cast picture and then having them in character in said pictures is a huge waste imo.

Example.

Now, again, I think this feature is pretty awesome. But it needs to kinda consistently work like this.
Even though the cast is in character in those pictures, it works. Because the pictures are clean and up close.

    Welcome to the forum.

It's not about the actor, it's about what the actor is wearing. Plex has been leading the way for some time in the art of Form over Function and in this case Fashion takes priority. Another thoughtful design feature dreamed up by the same guys that bring you:
Horizontal Scrolling through the patented Over and Under Vomitorama library view for ALL their apps.
Cleverly hidden necessary server functions - and when you find them, they'll move them again.
Undocumented TV Show Matching requirements - mystery makes life more interesting.
    50 clicks to nowhere.
    and much, much more.

In the old RARflix (the last of the great Plex apps) Cast and Crew images (the industry standard 'Headshot' image - in use for at least a hundred years), when clicked, whisk you off on a magic carpet ride to every single Movie in any of your libraries wherein that actor appears. In this new and improved Fashion Premier the carpet crashes just after take-off. You're only allowed to see that person's body of work (and portion of their upper body) in that particular library, so if you have more than one Library (I have 26) it becomes quite tedious as you can imagine, but's that's my fault - Plex Designers only have 3 Libraries: Movies, TV Shows and Music (each with 4 items in it).

The mystery of Plex is something you'll never fully understand, Bob.
    How are things on 'Potatoho'?

    :)

Does this happens only for shows or also for movies? I don't have many TV shows on Plex and for what I can see most movie actor thumbs are just their face, not in character and not from far away. Maybe the reason is the source where Plex gets its thumbs...

I agree about this too, but again in my experience all the thumbs are closeups of the face, I'll check better tonight. What I don't like though is that for animation there is the face of the voice actors. I don't like it because seeing all this "humans" in the page of a cartoon is a bit odd, and also because animation in Italy is dubbed by excellent italian dubbers that are not featured in the cast.

This kind of stuff, and everything JuiceWSA mentioned, is exactly why I use Rasplex on a Raspberry Pi. It is still using Plex Home Theater isntead of the garbage that is Plex Media Player.

AFAIK PMP doesn't show actor thumbs. This looks more like the Windows store app (that, honestly, is really horrible) or the web interface. Or did they update PMP to add thumbs???

PMP got an upgrade so it is now as equally horrific as the New Plexweb.

Must have missed that, looked at it yesterday and no actor thumbs. But still, it's far less horrific than Plex for Windows "app", that one is really ugly and I hope that's not the new GUI paradigm they want to extend to every client LOL

I totally agree that the limitation of searching an actor's body of work only within the same library is quite frustrating. Especially with the recent trend of A-list movie actors making appearances or starring roles in television, a cross-library search would be useful. I could envision a setting where one could filter to include or restrict libraries, or even an 'All libraries' or 'Just this library' type of option.

I know Movies can be done across all your libraries 'cause RARflix Plex App for Roku is doing it right now!

TV Shows will be problematic. TVDB doesn't really have a very good way to enter that information and I'm sure Plex is going to have a problem accessing what little there is. Plex Movie (IMDB) is only for, you may guess, Movies and there is no IMDB/Plex mind-meld for TV Shows - at this moment.
