Unable to connect to the content server with Direct Play, stuttering movie on TV

manuximanuxi Posts: 23Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Dear community,

i'm using Plex for a long time now but more and more there appear some problems which keep me away from using Plex... :(
I've read several forum postings but none of them took me in the right direction.

My config: Synology DS 1512+ with 4GB, Plex 1.5.5.3634 PlexPass, Samsung TV UE46ES6300 App Version 2.007, connected via LAN. The Synology is plugged in to the same D-Link GB-Switch 50cm away in the same IP range (192.168.178.0/24), no extra Firewall. Plex worked at least with the UE46ES6300 without problems so far the last years...

(I have two more Samsung TVs, one from 2015 and one from 2011 - so sad on the 2011 in my living room: playing movies is worse there, nearly no new movie is working on the UE55D7090, neither with Direct Stream nor Direct Play - but I gave up there).

The problem: suddenly(?) newer movies on the Samsung TV UE46ES6300 stopped working correctly. This lasts since 2-3 weeks now. I know that transcoding will lead to 100% CPU on the weak Synology CPU (I never used this at home), but now when I start those movies also DirectSteam leads to nearly 95-100% - so the movies will stop every 20-30s for a while. I don't understand that DirectStream leads to such a high CPU load - is it trancsoding after all?

When I use DirectPlay movies are stopping immediately with the message "Unable to connect to the content server".

I made sure that subtitles are switched off, deleted every device from the device tab, logged out and in again and spent the last days trying to figure out what is happening.

First I thought the video files were corrupted but with VLC they're all working well. In despair of getting this to work I switched on the Plex DNLA function and startet the movies without the Plex app... and they're all working fine. wtf?

Also my mobile shows those movies without stuttering - via 2,4GHz WLAN... (at the moment one movie rund on VLC, via DNLA and on my mobile simultaneously; Syno-CPU: 10% max. - but not alone on Plex-TV-App... I'm going to get mad... :s )

I'll post the video and audio codecof one stuttering movie:
Video: Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1), 1920x738, 23.976215 frames/s, Planar 4:2:0 YUV
Audio: Codec: DTS Audio (dts ), Channels: 3F2R/LFE, 48000 Hz, Bitrate: 1536 kB/s
(Infos from VLC v. 2.2.4, Jun. 1st 2016, old as well).

So what's going on? Is it a Plex issue? Would be very sad, I really like the way Plex works - if it does.

Thank you fon any hint to solve this - really annoying - problem.

Cheers,
Manu

Today i played around with plex, removed the plex plugin, added it again, finally added the 1.6xxx 64x version with no success - movies were still transcoded. I was close to reset the plex config completely to get rid of this "bug", but I finally found the solution. It was the Upload-Speed (20MBit, in server/network settings) which caused plex to transcode nearly every movie - also in my LAN with GB-Speed. My Upload is indeed 20MBit (but that worked some weeks ago in LAN and outside it). Perhaps the devs can take a deeper look at this, may confuse and distract others as well ;)

So sorry to have you bothered, I'm happy again.

I'm having the same issues on my Samsung TV. When I stream from the browser it works fine. As you mention it worked fine some time ago through this is more than 2-3 weeks ago for my point of view.

I've added some Debug info from "Plex Media Server.log". Seems that there are lots of problems here?

Could someone push me to the right direction please?

Yeah, that looks pretty bad indeed. Could your disc(s) have gone bad?
Furthermore, your connection seems to use Relay which is limited in bandwidth.
You should try to connect your server directly by signing it in through Plex web.

Have you checked if your answer might be in the User Manual?

Ok, some time ago I tried to use my own cert domain, but I reverted everything under 'network'... what means relay exactly?
The TV is tied with 100MBit, the switch and the Nas are 1GBit... I'm signing in through plex web.
I checked the discs also, they seem to be fine.

Relay is the "last resort" to get get a working connection. Plex uses this when all other ways to connect fail.
For this it uses the Cloud service to create a connection relay, that's fine for mobile connections, but not so much for high bitrate clients like a TV.
If you are using secure connections (https) then Plex uses their own certificates for that.
Judging form the CERT: Error in TLS handshake: short read this is no longer working correctly.

Anyway, the problem seems to be the server. You need to get that working again, before testing the TV.
Maybe the guys in the server forums can help you out.
