No AC3/DTS sound after upgrading to PMP 1.3.0 (RPi embedded)

mindridermindrider Members, Plex Pass Posts: 3 Plex Pass

Hello,

After the latest PMP upgrade my sound is broken, which is odd as according to the release notes there was only bug fixes.
In more detail, my setup uses RPi's hdmi as output and a hdmi video/audio splitter outputs the audio to optical.
My bluray player/home theater amp., which is where the optical cable is connected to, used to identify the audio as ac3 5.1 or DTS or whatever, according to what stream is present in any given media.

After the upgrade this doesn't happen anymore and it seems that the stream comes out as PCM 2.0, just like when you are in the player menus. And ofc you can hear that something is completely wrong.

I tried all possible audio settings combinations without any luck.
My setup works as expected when I use RasPlex.

So, my questions are:

  1. Is this something known ? and if yes, when is going to get fixed?
  2. Where can I download the previous version(s) of PMP?
  3. Can someone say what is the cause of this issue?

Thanks and best regards,
George

I'm seeing this problem as well.

The pi no longer outputs any audio when hdmi is selected as a device, i now need to select one of the other audio devices, which will play sound (still via hdmi funnily enough) but downmixed.

Just wanted to add a plus one here for seeing this bug. I have been going nuts trying to figure out what is going on with audio today. Data points/observations

    1. PMP 1.3.0 running through HDMI
    2. Navigation audio sounds work, any file's audio does not.
    3. Media files have audio which plays in plex.tv browser
    4. Speakers/receiver all work with other sources, and tone tests.
    5. This seems to be a regression in 1.3.0 only.

Could you guys post any logfile where we could see what's happenning ?

  • RICH|FLIXRICH|FLIX Members, Plex Pass Posts: 102 Plex Pass

Sure, here's the log from the pi after I tried to play a movie with HDMI selected as the output device.
This would have output multi channel audio before, but after 1.3.0, i get no sound whatsoever.

Thank you for following up on this.

Thank you guys for the feedback to my question and especially for your actions (Github post, logs)

@LongChair : Please let me know if you need another set of logs

Here are two recent logs. I just played a file and no audio was sent through HDMI. The navigation click sound still does play through HDMI though.

  • RICH|FLIXRICH|FLIX Members, Plex Pass Posts: 102 Plex Pass

Another thing I've noticed, is that the navigation button click sound now works (there was no noise when I would navigate the menu before).

I don't know if that's got anything to do with the passthrough problem, but I thought it was worth mentioning as it's also sound related.

I had so many troubles using that audio setup but here is what worked for me (and still puzzles me):

    My hardware setup:
    RPi3 /w PMP1.3 - hdmi to - LGTV - optical out to - Marantz AVR.

    My audio/software setup:
PMP Audio is set to hdmi: No sound.
PMP Audio is set to optical-out: Perfect sound.

I am not sure if I just do not get the audio config or if that is just the way it should be. But my intuition still tells me I should use hdmi out and it should work that way.

Another data point, this is also presenting on YouTube and Plex videos played from the queue. Pretty much any audio that is not a user interface click will not come through. I don't have an optical out to try or an internal speaker, but the HDMI input works well when playing through VLC or Plex Web

I'm having the same problem. RPi3 (PMP 1.3.0) -> HDMI -> Denon receiver. Since the update, all DD/DTS (5.1 or 7.1) over HDMI is being mixed down to 2.0. No combination of audio preference changes restores surround sound.

  • coneybeareconeybeare Members, Plex Pass Posts: 64 Plex Pass

Is there any update on this bug? Plex Media Player is completely unusable in my setup until fixed.

Same here, no matter what I choose in settings, I get 2.0 sound. Using RPi3 with 1.3.0 connected to Yamaha receiver via HDMI. Using tvservice & edidparser I could see that the RPi is properly detecting support for multichannel, so this seems to be an issue with pmp not sending the correct sound.

I have 3 alsa devices to choose from in the settings->audio->devices where the last one is identified as HDMI. If I select that one, I get no sound at all, the other two works fine but 2.0 only.

I've tried disabling the HDMI settings I had in /flash/config.txt, but it still didn't bring back >2.0 channels.

@LongChair I've added logs and other stuff to the git issue. Would be awesome if this got some love in the near future since I've converted my entire BD and DVD library to MKV to use Plex and now there is no surround sound :( and I'm sure I'm not alone with this issue :)

Gets more interesting, tried the speaker-test app with the -c 6 option (white noise will be played on each channel in a 5.1 configuration) and only one channel actually produced any sound (front left). Which matches what amixer says (mono) but it makes me wonder if things are even worse, that it's not even 2.0 sound, it's actually 1.0 (!!!)

I tried the latest build that i have, and i seem to be having issues with selecting the iec958 device from the audio devices list.
Although it seems that using Auto Select devicewould work to get 5.1 on my AVR here.
    Could anyone confirm this ?

@RICH|FLIX : that is typically what i see in your logs

When looking at your logfile, it seems the file you're playing is stereo :

@LongChair Sure, but the problem persists on any file. Navigation sounds work through HDMI. Plex Web works through HDMI. Plex Media Player does not play through HDMI at all, on any file.

While you investigate, is there anywhere I can redownload PMP 1.2.5 to work around the regression?

  • markus101markus101 Members, Plex Employee, Plex Pass, Plex Ninja Posts: 157 Plex Employee

@coneybeare you can grab 1.2.5 from https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ We've pulled 1.3.0 for the time being while we investigate this and another issue.
