New Look for Roku

Are there any plans to update the ROKU look to something similar to the Apple TV look or the Web interface look?

    Say what?

I'd kiss every *** on Bear Creek Road if the app UIs looked and behaved similar to the Plexweb interface - even with it's flaws - it's impossible to calculate the magnitudes of visual improvement and ease of navigation that would provide (and Bear Creek Road is infamous for having the nastiest ***es in the county).

That Vertical Grid layout alone would be worth puckering up for half them be-hinds at least and I'll even go 'No Chap-Stick Mode'.

    lol

I agree. Not a big fan of the Roku/Xbox One layout...

The problem with getting "a new look" for the Plex app for Roku, is even if the Roku interface would allow it, that would mean going through the whole app development process again. Plex is not a simple program and there is a lot of work that goes into designing the interface for it.

Our Plex app for Roku developer has worked out all of the kinks and added all the bells and whistles and features we all wanted to the current interface. The only real issue we see now is when Roku screws up their software.

If we get a new interface, then it will be a very basic interface with no features. It will be at least 6 months of development just to fix all the issues that come with an app like Plex that has so many functions and uses. Then another 6 months to get all the little bells and whistles and features everyone wants added back. And that is taking into account that we have @ljunkie designing our app (aka the machine that never sleeps). Many of the other Plex apps still do not have all the kinks out or all the features we have.

@ljunkie is good, but even he cannot develop a brand new interface for Plex that meets every Roku users needs with no issue and all of the bells and whistles that every users wants overnight.

I find the current Roku much, much better than what I saw in 2012/2013 when I first created an account. It was a hot mess then. Very slick now, and is my only music player at home, in the office, and on the road.

I am not saying we have everything we want from Plex. And of course there are some features that people want just for their specific setup that would not benefit the variety of setups that exist.

The features people would like added now are not features that can just be added by the Plex app for Roku developer with the existing interface. They require changes to Plex Media Server before anything can be done at the Plex app for Roku level or are interface changes that would require a complete rewrite.

So, what features do people want for the Plex app for Roku that is currently available on another Plex player app? (that does not require a complete rewrite)

Let's not sugar coat this thing, OK?

While these apps were in development Plex ignored users and developed the app they wanted from jump-street. The apps are marginal in their usefulness, at best, generally considered a hazard to navigation.

I can tolerate playing TV Shows from On Deck with the new Apps. Discovery is a nightmare, made a horrific nightmare via two horizontal rows of tiny posters that CAN'T BE SEEN on TVs from across the room! The entire time these apps were in development users tried to tell Plex horizontal scrolling was going to suck, but Plex did it anyway. Guess what? Horizontal Scrolling sucks, exactly like users said it would.

Looks fine on your 72" Plasma while you sit 6 feet away from it? Where in the Plex Fine Print does it say what equipment is needed for the 'Optimal Plex Experience'?

Discovery Hubs are a hazard to navigation - always have been - always will be. They need a switch on them to disable them. Period.

@ljunkie is very capable and has worked wonders from inside the box Plex has built for him to work inside of. Clearly, no other app development team can even come close. @ljunkie , if not placed inside this imaginary box and told to develop an app that doesn't leave the box would have developed a vastly superior Plex user experience BECAUSE HE ALREADY HAS and it's the reason Plex hired him in the first place.

RARflix: The Sequel, is a movie that may never be made, but you can bet your sweet bippy if it were made users would be treated to a decent Plex app - not this mess.

Plex and Plex Fans love these apps.
The cheering falls off rather abruptly outside those ranks.

    And I agree.

But the point of my post was that our app developer has given us the features he can within the structure that was set by Plex. Features, like hub management, would have to be addressed by the developers of Plex Media Server. And starting from scratch with a new UI for the Roku will not encourage the developers of Plex Media Server to address those issues and features, it will only delay it.

And complaining within the Plex app for Roku section of the forum about past choices made by Plex about its overall direction and design will not accomplish anything, since those decisions are out of the hands of the person who actually develops the Plex app for Roku. Those are better suited for the General and Feature sections.

    Oh, I get it.

Gobble up what Plex decides is best for users (read: best for Plex) and don't make a lot of waves.

That's not really my style, but I get it.

Feature Requests? Are you serious? There are Feature Requests right now that have thousands of 'likes' (so I've heard), but Plex doesn't like them, so forgettaboutit. Feature Requests are User's Valiums, meant to calm the irate villagers while Plex continues to add limbs to it's Monster.

Right now there's a show stopper for Plex users who are also Parents in that X/R rated trailers for upcoming BluRay releases isn't something those unfortunate Parents want. In a perfect world Plex would have seen the error of their ways and leaped on that with both feet immediately, but Plex is either unwilling or unable to do anything about it. Parents remain dismayed while Plex does something else.

Yes, it's not a perfect world. I get that too.

But the features/issues you talk about are part of Plex Media Server, not the Plex app for Roku. And again, a new Plex app for Roku UI would just distract everyone, so they do not have to address those features/issues in Plex Media Server.

So again, what is accomplished by complaining about the choices Plex management have made or Plex Media Server here in this forum? None of that can be fixed in the Plex app for Roku.

And I can and have complained with the best of them about what Plex hasn't fixed or hasn't added yet.I just yell at the person or persons responsible.

    I give up.

You are right. Complaining about issues with Plex Media Server in the Plex app for Roku section of the forum makes perfect sense. And if I am telling you to post issues about Plex Media Server to the sections of the forum for Plex Media Server, then I must be some "plant" or "schill" because that would just be ridiculous.

You've caught me. I am actually part of a super super secret society. We are the Illuminati Bildeberg of Plex and we even have a secret handshake. And what we did not want you to figure out is that all the Plex Media Server developers and Plex executives love to spend all of their time reading the comments posted here in the Plex app for Roku section of the forum.

Darn it! You caught us. Now we have to go back to our secret lair in a cave under a pizza place and come up with a new plan for world Plex domination.

No, you're right, of course. If the Plex app for Roku developer could - and was allowed to - create a great Plex app for Roku he would have already done it.

You're wrong about Feature Requests in 'their proper place' however. Feature Requests are simply ignored, no matter where they are. There will be no meaningful changes in Server or App development and certainly no user input is going to matter one way or the other. Plex may have a plan for World Domination, but only Plex knows what that plan entails. Users find out about it as those steps are laid. They can either deal with them as they come - or not.

I do appreciate you allowing me to take a stand with those rogue lemmings running away from the cliff's edge - instead of over it. One day that teeny bit of evolutionary change may make it into the overall Lemming DNA and ultimately be a good thing in the big Lemming picture - or the other Lemmings will just eat those rogues, 'cause everybody knows if rogue Lemmings are allowed to evolve there's going to be too many of them.

I find it very disappointing that all we hear is BS as to why there is no update to the Roku UI. It seems that if Plex wanted to get the UI of Roku updated they would. I don't believe the BS that it "can't" be done or that it would take too much time. Roku has an open end developer's kit and they opened there code several months ago.

The current UI in Roku is vastly superior to the UI I used like 4 years ago. But I only use it for music and pictures.

Actaully he probably could do it over night. Plex limits him severely. When he was doing rarflix he was adding new features and settings nightly. Amazing developer if you take the leash off he would give the best plex app client period.

Well, keep in mind that the Roku Dev (ljunkie) was almost one of the most active devs in the forum and was very aggressive at updating the channel. There hasn't been any updates to the Roku channel and he's been silent for months now. I can only assume that he's hard at work on a major update/overhaul.
