Chapters on Plex App for Android TV (Nvidia Shield TV)

simon_lefischsimon_lefisch Posts: 138Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if the Plex app for Android TV (specifically the Shield TV) had chapter support? I could swear I had it working on my Shield TV by swiping down on the remote while the movie was playing, but no longer see that option. I do have "Generate Chapter Thumbnails" enabled in Server>Settings>Library enabled as well as "enable video preview thumbnails" under the specific library (Movies>Edit Library>Advanced). I still don't see any chapters though. I know it says that it can take a while to generate, which is why I enabled it last night, but still don't see anything. 97% of my movies/TV shows are MKV and have been encoded with chapter references. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

Weaksauce! Why the hell would they break a feature like that? Come on Plex....can't put movie collections under one title and now took away chapters? #fail

This was never a feature so idk how its relevant

    now took away chapters? #fail

I'm pretty certain they don't willfully break things

I know the collections was never a feature, which is why I made the comment that they haven't done that even though its a basic feature that should be implemented.

Also, I'm certain as well they don't willfully breaks things, but to not be added back after 3 stable releases is a little ridiculous since it was working perfectly fine. I'd have thought they would've added it back in the following release that it was broken in.

Yep, rather disappointed by the growing list of "broken" navigational/playback options that had worked wonderfully. The Plex app on Shield TV was my #1 :(. I've reverted to SPMC w/ PleXBMC plugin on Shield and it's working great with chapter support. Playback is also less glitchy. I tried using the official Kodi Plex plugin and it didn't appear to support chapters either.

So is there any way to get in contact with Plex to let them know about this? Seems like it's impossible to speak with anyone about these types of issues/bugs.

They know about it. I reported it when the beta broke it, and they responded saying they know and there's no ETA. The forums are the way to report things. I've read posts that Plex sometimes responds to Facebook posts and Twitter posts, but I haven't tried that.

    Where are my log files?

How do I properly name my media files?

So I just realized that my PMS update channel (on both my local server and VPS) was on Plex Pass, which means I was on PMS 1.7.2. I downloaded the public release of 1.5.6 and chapters are working again. Didn't even realize that was the case.

so when are chapters going to work again?
seriously this "bug" should have been fixed the second it was reported as being broken.

is this a PMS bug or an android client bug?

@chenks seems to be a PMS bug since chapters are working in PMS public release 1.5.6. Any other version above that, chapters are broken.

my PMS is 1.5.5.3634 though (i'm not plex pass)

  • simon_lefischsimon_lefisch Posts: 138Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

I don't believe you need to be a Plex Pass member for chapters. Make sure you have "Generate Chapter Thumbnails" enabled in PMS settings (Settings>Library) and "Enable video preview thumbnails" for each library (click the 3 dots on your lbrary>edit>advanced). I'm actually not sure if you need the last one but I enabled it anyway and it has been working. Both my local server and my VPS are on PMS v1.5.6.3790.

no, i mean that you said that chapters was only broken in versions after 1.5.6,
but as i am on 1.5.5 then that can't be the case.

you don't need either of those options enabled for the client to show chapters, as the chapters are embedded within files.
this was working before and now doesn't. no settings have been changed at my end.

those settings you mention are only for PSM to generate thumbnails, it is not required for PMS/Client to support chapters during playback.

Well all I can say is that since I downgraded from PMS v1.7.2 to v1.5.6, chapters have been working for me on my Shield TV box. I haven't tried dialing those settings yet though so that part may be true, but PMS v1.5.6 does have chapters working for me. Have you tried upgrading your PMS to that version to see if chapters are woking for you? Maybe that's when they got fixed?

1.5.6 was only an update to change the windows installer, so essentially it is the same as 1.5.5.
1.5.6 was not pushed out via the auto update stream, 1.5.5 remains the stable build via the update stream.

as a non-plex pass user 1.7.2 was never available to me.

  • chenkschenks Posts: 861Members ✭✭✭

    but 1.5.6 makes no difference.
no chapters presented in plex web or android clients

    @kegobeer-plex @MovieFan.Plex
can anyone advise what versions this is an issue with?

It was broken in beta 5.10.0.55. Anything prior to that works. If you are a Plex Pass holder, you can sideload an older version. If you aren't, or you want Live TV, you are just out of luck until Plex gets around to fixing it. I have no idea how high of a priority it is.

@chenks I can tell you that it is working on Android clients. The pic is from my Shield TV and streamed from my VPS.

I did disable those setting I mentioned on my local server and chapters disappeared. After re-enabling them, they have not come back but I believe it is do to it still creating the chapter thumbnails. Chapters are working in Android clients though.

Edit: I can also confirm that chapters do show when streaming from Plex Cloud to my Shield TV. Still waiting for my local server. Will check later this evening or tomorrow since I know it takes a while for the thumbnails to show.
