Version 1.7.5.4035 Crashing Randomly

AmoleoAmoleo Posts: 37Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass
edited July 1 in macOS/OS X (Mac)

The latest version (1.7.5.4035), and the previous version (1.7.3.3937), have been crashing randomly for me.

Which logs are needed to assist in diagnosing the issue?

See this support article for the logs

    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files

But ensure first that you have not disabled debug logging
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201643703-Reporting-issues-with-Plex-Media-Server

For crash reports, Plex Media Server will try to upload to plex back end systems. You can also look in the Mac OS diagnostic reports area

Which log files do you need out of the zip file? I've attached the one which seems relevant.

It would have been the preceding log file (Plex Media Server.1.log) and the related Plex Crash Uploader.x.log but you did not have Debug Logging enabled - so log is no use.

See the support article I linked to for enabling debug logging on the server
Restart the server after that to get fresh logs created with debug logging enabled
Wait for next crash - and best to use the web interface to download zip of all logs after restart of server following the crash.

But would also like you to look at the Mac OS Application Crashes diagnostic reports directory to see if any got created for Plex Media Server app.

See section on this support page
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201455336-Crash-Logs-Plex-Media-Server
    which mentions these 2 areas

    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
    ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

I've now enabled debug logging. Will await the next crash and then upload the logs.

I had nothing in the CrashReporter folder and I had a couple of Plex related files in the DiagnosticReports folder.

    They stated the error as:
    Crashed Thread: 3

    Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

    8 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x00007fffd38bb08d thread_start + 13

I'm hoping the next crash will generate a new error log so that I can include the whole file rather than just an except.

Thank you - I will refer this with the associated crash reports which I have found to the development team

It appears to be related to DVR recordings - so may be the streams are corrupted and leading to errors. The logs are full of errors before the crash

    Thanks for looking into this.

It's happened a couple more times since then. Would more logs be useful or just more of the same?

The version before 1.7.3 didn't experience the random crashes, but random versions prior (unknown numbers) have also experienced it.

Additional information DVR related: I'm in the UK using a DVB-T2 tuner to pick up Freeview. The tuner is the network based SiliconDust HDHomeRun CONNECT.

Further logs would show if there are still loads of errors when processing the dvr streams.

Your crash is different and it is one that has been reported on very recent windows builds - crashes are on Windows 10 builds 10.0.16226 / 10.0.16232

Until there is a fix - either in windows or Plex Media Server, you can disable Automatic Library Updates which should stop the crashes

6 crashes in just over a week

So after you mentioned that it was the DVR causing errors, I removed the DVR from Plex and set it up from scratch again. I'm yet to have a crash again since.

I am getting other weirdness, such as recordings seem to be recording forever until you Cancel All Active Transcoding Sessions, and then they get added to the library. But that seems to be just general DVR issues.

    Just thought I'd update you.

When? The logs were captured at Jul 04, 2017 20:03:34
Was it the crash about 12 hours earlier?

Following from the list of crashes shown earlier, the logs show the following further crashes

    Jul 01, 2017 17:59:09
    Jul 02, 2017 00:00:10
    Jul 03, 2017 01:29:07
    Jul 03, 2017 22:59:09
    Jul 04, 2017 08:59:15

Looking at one of these, it is still DVR related and same crash as before

The supplied server logs cover period Jul 04, 2017 17:16:08 to 20:03:34 way after any crash

To chime in here. I'm using MacOS 10.12.5 with PMS 1.7.5 since early 29th of June without a single crash, now 10 days.

I would suggest to try the following to see if it resolves your issue, it certainly can't hurt.

    https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204063

    https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201295

Delete PMS cache ( From the "go" Menu) and restart. To access the Library you need to hold down the "option" key and navigate to go menu and click on Library.

    Go Menu/Library/Cache/ Plexmediaserver>> Delete>>Empty Trash>>Restart.
