1st gen iPad 5.1.1 Plex alternative?

Ann ErgiaAnn Ergia Posts: 84Members ✭✭

I picked up a 1st gen ipad with 64GB for cheap. But, of course, I can't get the old version of the Plex app.

Is there an alternative to Plex for iOS 5.1.1 (preferably free) that will work with my Plex Media Server? I also have access to non-apple-store stuff, but I'm not sure how to install those.

You can install Kodi onto your iPad, then you can install Plex's official Kodi addon to access your server.

This link explains how it works

Hmm. I looked at the Kodi site but the current version needs ios 6.0 or
newer, which I can't get. I could use an older custom build but I'm not
confident with Cydia and converting .deb to .ipa yet. Plus I'd need to sign
up for Plex Pass to get the Kodi for Plex and I'm dirt poor, so I'd rather
    not right now.

    Here's hoping there's another way...

Thank you for answering my question so fast though!

As I remember, old version of apps are available since iOS 4.

Server: vSphere-based PMS with Ubuntu 14.04

    Clients: Panasonic TX-PR50ST60 (2013), Samsung UE32J6300 (2015), Amazon TV, iOS, Android, PS4

If you d/l them without the ipad attached, then some will ask if you want to
get the latest compatible version. Plex is not one of them (at least for
    me).

Keep the suggestions coming while I continue to search!

    Thank you, Lordwind. :)

I found an alternative, but it's not nearly as good as Plex.

Having said that, I tried to install the old Plex app 3.5.3 and it worked!
But now the server sees the ipad, and the ipad *seems* to see the servers
(we have 2 and they both show up on the ipad), but there is nothing on the
home screen and it keeps asking for a default server no matter how many
times I choose one. Then it says it can't connect to the server.

Suggestions again, please - or a link.

The old apps cannot connect to newer PMS. You'd need to install an old version of PMS, but Plex doesn't offer those anymore either.

I would suggest using PlexWeb. I'm not sure if there are restrictions with older mobile browsers, but it's free and you don't have to install anything.

I think we figured it out. It wasn't connecting to our network. Seems to
    be working now.

Of course, I've probably just jinxed myself. :)

This may well be the best option for this scenario.
