Online streaming help please?

painpain Posts: 93Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Hello Plex People!

I have the Nividia shield 16gb with an attached hdd. Locally I have no issue streaming to Roku and or our Samsung smart TV. However when my brother streams from my shield to his Roku or PS4 at his home (only about 50 miles away) he gets buffering and it seems random. Some times it works fine thru the whole movie. Some times it buffers like crazy. At first we thought maybe I was streaming at the same time. I have fiber optic 100Mb up and down and hes on 100 down. Ive done a tracert and pinged his IP with no issues. Before I had a HTPC and we had no issue for the most part. Ever since we got the shield he can not stream from me without issues. I would like to share my library with my family. Does any one have any suggestions? Thanks Pain

It is transcoding? are these high bitrate files

They are MKV files and I don't think it's transcoding. Thanks...

mkv is just the container. the PS4 app cannot play them and at minimum will need the server to remux ( which requires the transcoder ) if not a full transcode, depending on what types of streams are in the file. while it is playing if you looks at the Now Playing activity screen and hit the info button it will say if transcoding or not. in the server log files during the transcode there will be a speed value and if that value is less than 1.0 then it is not transcoding the file in real time.

bit rate basically refers to the quality of the file. depending on how it was made from the original sources it can have a high bitrate where it has lots of data per frame or a lower bitrate were it might have more compression. but that is just a very basic example. A high bit rate file will need more bandwidth. your upload speed should be fine. does your friend have a good download speed?

Yes he has 100 mb down. Before I had the sheild I had a home theater PC and he was able to stream from me just fine. Thanks for your help I will check out if it's transcoding. He uses his Roku 3 most of the time with the same issues.

    Double post sorry.

If I set online streaming to original will that cause Plex not to transcode? Beans I have a hundred megabytes upload fiber-optic I can easily send gigs faster than you can watch it.

After about 30 minutes of online streaming lose connection to server. So I don't think it's transcoding issues I have no clue at this point any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Do you use the web player?
Do you need to reboot the Shield when this happens?

If yes to both, see this thread

No, rebooting don't seem to fix it. Its so random. The shield doesn't crash that I no of.. Attached is a zip of the log files...

The issue is between the shield and Roku3 online streaming.. Local streaming is fine...

Any chance someone can read the logs and see whats wrong?

  • MovieFan.PlexMovieFan.Plex Posts: 16,037Members, Plex Pass, Plex Ninja Plex Employee

I looked at your log. I do see the buffering issue but it doesn't appear to be coming from PMS. It could be your or your brother's network.

What latency values did you get?

Or it might be his Roku. Can you ask him to reproduce the problem them get us the logs from the Roku app?

It doesn't appear to be a latency issue. I'll wait for the Roku logs to see if there is any info there.

Im not sure how to get the logs. But I did read you can retrieve them with his username? He is trying right now at 1:32 PM PDT 7-18-2017 username medlint

Also I noticed it says Video is "Direct Stream" and Audio says "Transcoding DCA to AC3".....

Here is the Roku log file.. The year date is one day advanced for some reason. The event happened on 7/18/17 @6:50PM.

There is very little in that log. I'm not sure which procedure from the article you/your brother used, but it wasn't done right.

  • painpain Posts: 93Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Well we just enabled debugging. Could that be why?

  • painpain Posts: 93Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Here is another log file.. It happened again and he ran and got this log right away.. So it should show something.. I hope...

    Thank you for your help!!!!

Did you get a chance to look at the last log?
