With the added - lockup and reboot at 19:29 or so while using the RARflix app that up until right now was immune to the spontaneous lockup/reboot of the Official App.

    the plot thickens...

...It sounds similar to the "3gb bug" from a couple of years back.

    Yes it does, doesn't it?

Unfortunately this episode of Ancient Aliens (I just can't help myself, Man) is about 900Mb and Ancient Astronaut Theorists Agree, that's really odd.

    :)

    As it stands right now...

Roku has bricked my 4200 with their latest FW. No matter what I use (RARflix or Official) it's locked up and rebooting once or twice an hour. The only other box type I have it AFTV V1. I switched over to that and in 20 minutes it had locked up so hard I had to power cycle the unit.

Right now, between Roku and Plex I'm down to the 'HDMI cable from the server to the TV trick' and a PMP dragged and dropped to it.

    Not too good.

Although I really suspect it's new and improved Roku FW giving you grief, it sounds similar to a problem I had a few years ago.

I had a couple of shows I had recorded, and cut out the commercials. The show was in AC3 5.1, but apparently most of the commercials were in stereo AC3. If I didn't make the cuts perfectly, there would be the occasional segment of stereo audio. Files played perfectly thru the Roku Plex app connected to the surround receiver, but crashed when they were played on a stereo TV when they got to that short stereo segment. The only proof I have is that the display on the receiver flipped from surround to stereo and back to surround (almost instantly) at a couple of the cuts, and coincidentally that was where the Roku connected to the stereo TV crashed.

On the chance there is a surround AC3 audio track for the Ancient Aliens (I watch it too, you are not alone) try removing the AC3 audio and fall back to a single stereo AAC track. If I could actually understand the logs, I might not make such a simple, unproven suggestion. :)

Thanks, but that just happened to be what I was watching at the time. I get the same thing on blurays and dvds, so it's absolutely the dreaded FW Porking. I rolled back. It's livable at least 'cause RARflix is immune to the lockup/reboot cycle the new app demonstrates with expert precision.

All my stuff passes through Xmedia Recode for a complete audio overhaul, so if there was any 'funny bidness' in the audio department that got 'redesigned' in it's entirety...

    :)

RokuDale seems to think it has to do with a 1080p display and he says forcing it to 720p may be a work-around. I'll take his word for it 'cause I can't prove otherwise, but I bailed on the new FW opting instead for the shortcomings of the previous version.

    We do what we must.

Rolled my 3 back to 7.6 (or whatever the last one was - through the Secret Squirrel Screen) and apart from the standard lockup/reboot sequence, all is as it was.

RARflix is still immune to the lockup/reboot sequence, but during the 7.7 trials everything was taking a beating. My suggestion is that if you're looking for a fix to a 'New Box' problem, try it out. If you don't have any problems with your 'older box', try it out, or avoid it, but if you get it anyway or took the plunge and found out that was a bad idea - The Secret Squirrel Screen will let you roll it back.

RokuDale is avoiding the question directly, but has 'hinted' the ills are being investigated and only The Shadow Knows what that means.

    :)

Sounds like they borked roku 3 7.7 firmware. I have the 7.7 on my 2 ultras and it is much better. Have not updated my roku 3 to it yet. This is the sad thing from this company. They have complete control over these boxes and do not make THAT many variations where how can they not be testing this stuff. I think they need to broaden their Beta program because clearly it is lacking.

I am NOT a happy camper right now. Roku Inc has bricked my trusty Roku 3 (4200X) with FW that fixes new models and if they can't rectify this issue with yet another FW disaster movie, that will very likely cause other issues, my only hope is that the purchase of another Roku 3 Version (not a 4200X, obviously) will alleviate my pain and suffering.

Amazon's return policy is bulletproof and Roku 3 Refurbs are available for about 50 bucks, so that may be an option. The chances of me actually purchasing one of those New Rokus is about the same chance a Sno-Ball has of a long and healthy life IN HELL!

Clearly I'm going to eventually need to do something if things in the Roku FW division don't bear edible fruit. I've been trying to use my AFTV, but that thing's Plex App is locking up so hard 3 times an hour I have to power cycle the unit to get it back in service - and if History is any indication, Plex fixing that is a pipe-dream.

Rolling back the Roku is an option for some of us, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't convince a couple of my users to do that. Why the communication between the server and Roku fouls up and a transcode begins part way thru a show baffles me. Happening too often recently, and it's making me crazy. Local connection - all hard wired (no wifi), on stuff that played flawlessly previously.

On a side note, possibly unrelated, but if I try to switch HDMI connections (from Roku to Computer, for example) while the file is being transcoded, the connection automatically pops back to the Roku. If I stop the session, the HDMI switches properly. Is it possible the Roku is "locking" the HDMI connection somehow? I know that's not very technical, but that weird glitch only occurs once the Roku asks for the session to transcode midway through...

Just adding my confirmation that 7.7 is doing wonky things with direct play. I have watched several shows tonight and in nearly every one, it has dropped out of Direct Play and resumed play transcoding with direct stream for both video and audio. Restarting fixes it and it won't necessarily do it again at the same spot. Seems to be random at this point. Reverted to 7.6 and problem has gone away.

ROku made a change in the way plex streams directplay videos this afternoon on roku firmware 7.7. Rebooting your Roku is enough to get the configuration change. Please try plexapp again.
    Thanks for your patience.

Tried the 'New and Improved' 7.7 FW...:
WHAM! - From Direct Play to Transcode in 90 seconds flat.

'New and Improved' = Epic Failure.

I never ever though I would say this but it seems that Roku's quality control for their software has dropped to the point where I can no longer recommend Roku for many cases. I think a lot of the problem, as with much of the problems with Plex, is due to trying to be too "fancy." I am moving as much as possible to other platforms for everything I watch. For Plex it looks like a dedicated Raspberry PI is the best for me.

Both Roku and Plex need to simplify what they are doing so that they can actually remain reliable. The direction both are taking is moving them into "Paris Hilton" territory; "Pretty, but dangerously unstable."

Plex has lost me! I am moving all my local media consumption to Emby. There are things about Plex that are better than Emby but Plex has begun misleading their customers and even telling their users bald faced lies and that is unacceptable so I no longer use Plex for any media consumption.
I will NOT be lied to by a company I have any choice about using.
It has been a good ride but I now feel that I am the one being ridden.
Emby is NOT better software but they are a better company at this point.

Except it failed to fix the problems as Roku dale reported in a later post. There appears to be no fix forthcoming from Roku so I recommend that people look to other platforms for Plex streaming.

I have been having this issue with the Roku Streaming Stick, I tried to downgrade the Firmware from the secret menu but only had the option for the same firmware version ? Am I unable to now that there is a 'New and Improved' 7.7 FW...

  • JuiceWSAJuiceWSA Posts: 6,807Members ✭✭✭✭✭

I was worried I wouldn't be able to roll back to 7.6 since I had both 7.7 (failed) attempts installed, but was able to get back to 7.6 through the secret menu. Can't explain how it happened, but glad it did.
