ElectricGhostElectricGhost Posts: 31Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Hello. My fire stick woun't direct play i think. it happened like 2 months ago where the video looked better when transcoding then direct play then it started to direct play again. i got an update for plex on firestick. now nothing looks right with direct play when before certain files would direct play, i think before only ones with aac audio would direct play.

Be sure to check your 'Max 264 Level' setting (in the Plex App Settings - from the Drop Down under your Username). The default setting for Gen 1 devices is 4.0 and most of the material in use on Earth is 4.1. That will cause an immediate video transcode. Simply change the Level setting to 4.1.

You should also enable Information Overlay:
Play something (anything), hit OK, arrow right to The Gear, hit OK, arrow down and enable Information Overlay.
You'll then get some onscreen info about the stream when you press OK and that could indicate why an item is in transcode and offer clues as to what you can do about it.

You could also check AC3 in the audio section. There's an outside chance that even if you don't have a sound system that supports multi-channel your TV will be able to deal with it. Mine does and I don't have any idea how exactly. All I do know is when I feed it AC3 5.1 it deals with it and I can actually hear the dialog. I guess that's all that matters.

thank you JuiceWSA for the speedy reply. I already have ac3 checked in audio. Most of what i am watching is either AAC or MP2 audio now. My firestick is the 2nd gen. My max 264 level is set to 5.0. should i make it 4 or 4.1? and audio, should i uncheck ac3? it was always checked. i think thats the default now. what should i do?

I have tryed everything. uncheck ac3. change 264 level while checking and unchecking direct play box. video looks best when 264 level is 4.1 or higher and direct play is unchecked. In fact, some videos look bad no matter what i do direct play checked or unchecked. and these are 5 to 6 mb videos at 50 fps. Always looks like the camera is jumping up and down. and an outline on all people and objects. In Fact, plex didn't work at all last night after 6:45 est on all my devices. i contacted my network provider and they said it didn't seem like anything on there end. Maybe i've actually posted in the wrong area... sorry im tired and i forgot last night. Lemme know if theres a way for me to get a log or something.

If your default Level is set at 5.0 there's no need to change it.
What does Information Overlay tell about the stream? Is it Direct Play, or Transcoding and if Transcoding, why is it Transcoding?
It's possible your FPS is incompatible with Fire/Plex in some way, but we won't know that until you report what Information Overlay is telling you about the file.

MP2 Audio? Maybe you'd better change that to AAC 2.0 or AC3 2.0 or something more compatible. Xmedia Recode can handle that in moments:

    Select Container
    Copy Video
    Convert Audio

most of the audio is AAC lately im noticing anyway.

I doubt the fps is incompatible. 50 and 60 fps worked forever when direct play was working and by the looks of it, its working with transcoding on this one file im watching currently at least. I understand why you say that though and in some cases the original 50 or 60 fps may not be working. I remember doing the plex optimizer and having it butcher my 60 fps into 30 fps. But this one video im watching currently i can definitly see the 60 fps is working and i think its transcoding.

Where is the option for "display information overlay" on the firestick 2nd gen? or am i misunderstanding something?

Can't get plex on my firestick

  • ElectricGhostElectricGhost Posts: 31Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

ok. it appears my files are direct playing according to the information overlay. i think plex is just not liking some of my files or butchering the fps. problem solved. Thanks
