Anyone else having a Ads being inserted while watching server TV?

jackb_guppyjackb_guppy Posts: 14Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Last week while watching series TV from my Plex server, Amazon FireTV stick just played the episode. Today doing the same, Amazon FireTV stick w/ Plex client, is inserting Ads. The lenght of episode remains the same (example 43mins), the process bar shows same time remaining (example 23mins). So the stream is frozen, but the Ad is playing, so not in the stream. Only faster forward gets you though.

Others having this issue?
Did it start with the updated Plex GUI?
How to go back to old one, until this is corrected?

What exactly are you watching..what do you mean when you say "series TV from server"?
Live TV? DVR you recorded? Video files on your server? Plex 'channel' plugins (and if so, which ones)?
    Watch later queue?

I'm glad you're asking these questions.
I've never seen anything like that, but I am peeking out through the gun-ports for any enemies in the compound - 'cause that would really suck.

...not Live or DVR... video file on server, MasterChef S08 - even episodes prior to GUI update. Ad is place at right point in play back. Cliff hang before Ad then ad 1 or 2 then back to the show. Inserting is currently just audio track, the screen is light black.

I will test other shows today also try to track via firewall, where traffic appears to be coming from.

Missed the last part. No plug-ins, no watch later queue. Simple select GUI and play.

All my files for TV / Movies are hard converted to 480p from 240p to 780p and file name and megadata is cleaned (adding title, episode, dates) from what ever the source via ffmeg on Linux.

Plex have already stated they will never add adverts into our media. Put down the pitchfork.

    I'm doubtful it's Plex.
I think it's somehow included in the video.
Try using VLC or another straight no frills media player if it can play the file and see if it has any ads.
That being said, even if it isn't included in the video, I could VERY easily see Amazon stooping to this level of invasiveness.
(Which, unfortunately, is one of the many reasons Plex changed policy - stupid 3rd parties requiring they make too many exceptions)

    Plex has said many things...
Lies, half truths, misdirection, obfuscation, promises they don't intend to keep, etc.

Where Plex is involved nothing surprises me.

Users are completely and absolutely in the dark about the future of Plex and any user that thinks they know what's going on - is a fool.

OK been watching a lot TV the same episodes over and over... Firestick, Roku3, RokuTV, Chrome, iOS.

So far only Master Chef on Firestick shows the behaviour of inserting ads into the playback from Plex. It is also since the new UI interface. Prior to UI, the Master Chef play just find without inserted commercials. I would guess the underlying decode of the stream on FireStick is trapping a signal and playing a commercial. Similar to HDMI in a webpage can get pump sound to video play back, EVEN if the speakers are set for mute. It is not the same commercial, so something is deciding what to insert. If I view Plex as harmless, I would guess that Plex is using FireStick native decoder, so it acts like a man-in-the-middle attack.

I call your names, and thank you for any attention you give to this thread. I call because you all have made release posts in Plex for Android.
Can any of you give input as to why/how Plex for Android on Firestick is getting commercials plugged into shows not streamed from Amazon?
Whether it be Plex's control or not, it seems 'shady'. If it's Amazon, we ask you ask them to stop on non-Amazon supported applications. If it's Plex, stop. That's just wrong.

    Hi!

Plex doesn't insert ads, and we are not aware that Amazon is doing something similar.
In order to identify the issue, It'd we awesome if you could provide some logs from the app when that happens, as well as a little clip/screenshot showing the issue.
    Thanks in advance!

I've never seen anything like that.

Could a virus infection do something like that?

For the record - if the tsunami of users leaving Plex now isn't large enough, injecting ads into our media will certainly finish off what's left of Plex... as we know it.

As stated by Jesús, we are not adding (nor planning to add) ads in your local media. We are not able to reproduce this, so logs (and a recording while it happens if possible) would help understand what's happening.

    Thanks!

Anyone stumbling across this post, including the original author, do you have a Samsung 'Smart' TV from 2014/2015 era?
Though the article is old, Samsung did in 2015 'accidentally' inject ads into it's 3rd party app video streams, without the 3rd party (as Plex would be in this case) knowing or requesting or agreeing to the 'feature'
    https://entertainment.slashdot.org/story/15/02/11/1211252/samsung-smart-tvs-injected-ads-into-streamed-video

Being that it's 2017, I see no reason why your current TV model, samsung or not, or even Amazon could not be doing the same.

Just closing this down. I have removed the firestick (gave to a friend) and replaced with a ROKU (I trust them more).

I bet you had some kind of 3rd party app installed on the firestick causing your issues.

Plex Media Server - Nvidia Shield Pro 500GB
    Storage/NAS - WD MyCloud EX2 - Dual 8TB WD RED Drives in Raid 1
LiveTV DVR / Captures - HDHomeRun Prime with Charter Spectrum Service / PlayOn for Netfix/Hulu/OnDemand Content Capturing
Clients - Nvidia Shield 16GB / Amazon FireTV 4K / Samsung 2017 TV Plex Client

@jackb_guppy - It would have been nice to allow Plex Employees to investigate your Firestick logs and, if possible, attempt to determine where the content was coming from. They then might have been able to go to the vendor and ask they stop.
Good luck with the Roku. From what I've seen on the forums, I get the idea there are less issues them overall.
    I love mine.
