Speed up loading time after fast forward

vondalejvondalej Posts: 24Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

I'm looking for a way to make the video file load faster after I fast forward. When I skip commericials, no matter 30 seconds or 4 minutes it has to load all the way back to 100% usually taking 5-10 seconds. Is there a way to eliminate this or speed it up? I've noticed when I'm using my laptop there is 3-4 minutes that I can skip ahead without any loading. I have the roku hardwired into my router that has more speed than anyone would ever need.

Hardware Client: Roku Ultra
Server: Ubuntu 16.04
Internet speed: 586Mbps

If your recordings are transcoding. Transcoding takes time.
To see if an item is transcoding: Play item. Hit *, arrow left to first icon (graphic equalizer thingy), press *, arrow down to 'Stream Info' - that will let you know what's happening with the streams.

I create Direct Play material so transcoding isn't necessary. When I fast forward I resume almost instantly.

Handy Handbrake Guide in my signature - or you can 'Optimize' your material - basically it just pre-transcodes (if it works as intended - I use Handbrake - it works as intended every single time).

Increase your transcode buffer time in server settings. IF its transcoding. U need to verify whats its doing first.
JuiceWSA is correct. If u can setup so theres no transcode. Its instantaneous with direct.

So you have to manually convert in handbrake? Or does the Plex optimize function do that too?

The Optimize function will do it.
Might work OK, Might Not. Never used it myself. I've seen what Plex's Transcoder can do and wasn't impressed, but you could give it a try and see what happens.

I have read on this forum that a Roku Specific Profile would be of great use, so apparently there does seem to be some issues actually creating optimized versions that Direct Play on Roku with this magical Optimization routine.

If all else fails - Handbrake Guide in my signature.
Either way will probably take the same amount of time, but I guarantee Direct Play for Roku if you use my guide.

This is a plex on roku problem with no work around. Got the premier tonight, same thing, takes 15 second to buffer just to rewind 10 seconds. Fire stick 1st gen is instant, that's just sad. I have dual xeon e5-2670 , it's not a server problem and roku is the only device I own that does that. I own mi box, Google Nexus tv, fire sick first gen, and nvidia tv. Returning the roku tomorrow.

Don't do what these other people are suggesting and re encode your files to fix this, that's just dumb, just get a device that's handles plex better.
