Reliable PMS?

Hi Guys,

I've been using Kodi for a while and TBH I only ever use it for streaming my own content, so I thought I'd try something like Plex. I have a netgear older nighthawk router with a 8TB WD MyCloud single drive attached to it. I currently use AFTV with Kodi. I want to get a Apple TV.

What cheap PMS would you recommend in my situation? (not concerned about 4K streaming unless its off apps and not too worried about fancy audio codecs)

My only issue is, I want something to sit next to my router and NAS where I dont have to configure it and everytime and I can drag files to the NAS the PMS just updates and I can watch it on my clients. I also want to remotely manage it so I don't have a heaps of stuff in my kitchen next to the router.

I do have an old laptop with no screen that I would love to use as server so I don't have to fork out the money, but I'm just not sure what's the best way to go about this.

You want cheap and you want an Apple TV.
I am going to say wait.
Double or triple your budget then get into it!!

Plex related : NAS Qnap TVS-1282, (Plex server & main storage) Synology 1817+ (backup Plex server & backup storage), 2x NUC (Skull i7 , i5), Drobo 5N and 2 Nvidia Shield Pros (backup Plex servers)(2017 and 2015)
Client hardware used or using - Shield 2015 pro and 2017 pro, ATV4, Xbox 360 and one, Fire stick and TV, windows PMP, Raspberry PI, Roku Stick, 3 and 4 plus several Android Phones and Tablets.

I give MY opinion from MY experience!

So much importance is put on the processing power of your PMS box.
I say equal or more should be put on correctly formatting and optimizing your media !

Why not scrap apple TV and try Nvidia shield and have PMS and PMP on same device.

I've no experience with the shield so do your own research.

I won't use shield as a PMS as I will be running off wifi and have heard it can be troublesome if not running on Ethernet. My transcoding needs aren't great as most are in the right format already and I'm only ever going to need 1 or 2 streams. Unless because it's an Apple TV it will only play MP4 through plex? In which case I'll be transcoding a lot.

Could I just get a NUC? Would that work nicely with my net gear nighthawk and my cloud?
