Can't find device profile for TiVo Bolt

When I try to play a video on my TiVo Bolt, the following error is logged by the latest Plex Media Server 1.9.4.4325 for Linux.

ERROR - Unable to find client profile for device; platform=TiVo, platformVersion=20.7, device=Bolt (Series 6), model=TCD849

I found the Profiles folder at

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles

but I don't see anything related to TiVo devices. Do I need to create a new profile for TiVo or is there some configuration that is messed up that is not mapping the device information to the proper profile?

The Tivo Bolt does not have a profile because it is a closed system and therefore not officially supported, regardless of any reports from those able to circumvent Tivo's mechanisms and play,

Hey @ChuckPA , same issue with Plex for Kodi which IS a supported client, right? Can you please raise this issue within Plex?

You can make a Feature Request . If there is sufficient interest, they'll pick it up and add it.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I never had to "circumvent Tivo's mechanisms".

TiVo has a Plex app on the device, I have a Plex Media Server running, it used to work, but now with the 1.9 series of releases on my Linux server, it no longer works.

I stand corrected. The Tivo app is part of the "Smart TV" player app family. It won't have a distinct profile because the app already has a profile

To determine what's actually happening, the log files need to be gathered from the app itself. When enabled, the logs will be collected during the playback. As you turn it back off, the logs are sent directly to PMS and included in the main PMS log files which you can then upload here (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs). I will need the ZIP file it gives you

Feature Request? It's an obvious bug, easily repro'd by anyone with an affected client.

Luckily it's only a minor bug of the "log spam" variety. But this demonstrates exactly what is so frustrating about the whole Plex dev model:

    • users discover obvious bug in product
    • users discover there is no public bug tracker to report obvious bugs
    • users report issue in the forum
    • "Plex Team Member" seemingly doesn't understand obvious issue and fobs users off to "Feature Request" forum

    Disappointing.

TiVo Bolt should be a fairly capable player, even supporting 4k.
However I find that I can not play many programs and rely on my LG TV Plex app.

Attached Log for one example failure, happy to provide more.
In this case the program never started, for other programs it may start playback before it fails.

My Plex Server is running on Ubuntu 16.0.4 on a fairly recent Xeon Processor based server.

I restarted Plex Media Server, loaded the Plex app on my TiVo Bolt and enabled logging. I then tried to play a movie which failed. I disabled logging on the TiVo Plex app and then exited the app.

I've attached the resulting log files from Plex Media Server.

    The log you supplied shows:

    1. Invalid frame rate in the source file. 24.015 is not a valid frame rate. Video transcoding forced .
    2. Audio channels (6) greater than supported natively by the app/device (2) (not an error but audio transcode is forced)
    3. Started with Tivo and played 484 seconds
    4. Stopped playback and switched to FireFox

This isn't a Linux error. At best it's an error with the smart TV app.

I am moving this thread to the Smart TV forum where that team can better assist you.

The video did not play for 484 seconds. It did not play at all. In fact, the entire time I had the Plex app opened on the TiVo was under 5 minutes for this test so I have no idea why you think the video played for over 8 minutes.

Plus, there's this error in the Plex Media Server log file which sure seems like not everything is fine as you suggest:

That 'error', while annoying, isn't an error. The device, whatever it is, responded to the IGP ping with something other than XML. That's what the message is attempting to say.

As for playing on the Tivo, here is an instance of playback starting and indexing 322.229 seconds into the movie.

    @zabolots

I did not request a PM from you.
    You have a player issue.
You do not have a Linux issue.
I do not know the players. I know and support Linux and NAS boxes.

322 seconds was the start point for the failed playback attempt from the TiVo. I had previously played the start of the movie from a Firefox browser window to ensure Plex Media Server could access the file.

FYI, this only seems to fail on the TiVo Bolt. I have an older TiVo Premier and playback works fine there.

Then it's clearly an issue with the player and, again, outside my area of expertise as well as experience. I have Roku products in my home.

So how do we get this fixed?
Is this something for Plex? Who/how do we contact the right person if you don't take it to them on our behalf?
Or do we need to take this to TiVo customer support?

Since you can play successfully with your other Tivo products but not the Bolt, I would start with Tivo and see what's different; why the same smart app might work on the older but not the newer. Such things, like the roku, are usually firmware based.

I don't know if this is useful, someone in the TiVo forum said a couple months ago:

"Am trying to avoid getting yet another device (Roku Ultra), more cables, more power outlets... just wish TiVo had its own Plex XML profile. Instead the Bolt+ is calling the HTML TV App.XML that has a 1920x1080 resolution limit. Despite documented reqs, the Bolt+ Plex won't even play a HEVC (h.265), stereo AAC file directly. Surely the Bolt+ hardware is every bit as capable as the LG TV itself."

The only thing that has worked for me is to disable DirectPlay to get programs that fail to play on the Bolt.

Who owns this, does TiVo develop /compile the Plex app on their box, do they give the Plex team API requirements, who owns the opportunity to make the TiVo app better and have a dedicated profile that accurately indicates its capabilities?

That is helpful but I need more to submit and justify asking for a profile to be created and treating the Bolt as a discrete device. HEVC, for as much as some believe it's main stream, it isn't. 4K H.264 is far more mainstream than HEVC. HEVC decoding requires significantly higher hardware capabilities in the TV than H.264. The primary issue here is HDR (10 bit). Most automatically include HDR (10-bit) color when they think of HEVC. This is why I need more information. What is the scope of the request? Will it be sufficient to support H.265 8-bit? Is the HTML player no longer adequate and, if not, why?

PS: I am renaming the title of this thread. It's no longer Fedora specific. This is a much broader question and impacts anyone with a Bolt regardless of platform being used.
