How to direct stream/play movies on FireTV?

Aileron79Aileron79 Posts: 14Members ✭✭

I was forced to update the Plex app on my FireTV box. Now I don't know how to directly stream movies, Plex constantly complains that my server is not powerful enough to convert the movies. I did not have to convert them before the update, everything just worked fine... Whoever released this crappy version with the worst UI ever should be fired right away...

Server: P4 2.4GHz | 512 MB | Ubuntu 14.04 | Version 0.9.9.14

Clients: Rasberry Pi B+ 512 MB | Rasplex 0.4.1

I know about a thousand people that would agree with you...

That's not likely to happen 'cause he's probably the ONLY guy they have...

    Anywho...
If you have an early version of AFTV - Version 1, particularly - the unit wants to see a Max H264 Level of 4.0.
Unfortunately most of the material on Earth is 4.1 - at least.
You can get around this by changing the Max h264 Level setting in the Plex App Settings to 4.1 (or a little higher).

A great troubleshooting tool is 'Display Information' - if you enable it in the Plex App Settings.
While playing an item - or trying to - you can hit 'OK' and get some onscreen info about the stream in progress, like, Direct Play or Transcoding and if Transcoding the reason. That could help you identify problems, so you can do something about them.

If you have a later version of AFTV - I guess we'll see if that guy shows up.
    I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have been going insane all day trying to troubleshoot a problem with a 4K movie. I have tried every imaginable setting combination on the server and firetv. I have the newest firetv that just came out. No matter what, the movie stutters or audio is out of sync. However, on the web interface it plays flawlessly. Just to rule out the firetv as the problem, I put in my old Roku stick. The damn movie played flawlessly with direct play. How do you turn on direct play in the new firetv, I don't see it anywhere?!? The Roku takes almost 1.5 minutes to load the movie but then plays fine. The firetv loads it way faster but it's crap! Any insight??
