Android Apps are not showing thumbnails at all

Nott240Nott240 Posts: 39Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Using latest plex pass release here. My android apps won't show thumbnails at all, but they can play the files just fine. web browser and other players seems to be fine for now.

Any fix?

I've had it for a few weeks now. I've tried a lot of things without success. I don't want to downgrade my PMS just for this.

Can you provide more details? Is this any thumbnails or certain ones? What version of PMS and the app are you running? What type of device are you running and what version of Android does it have.

No thumbnails at all. Similar to the OP, it works fine on everything else. I've noticed this issue on all of these PMS versions:

    1.9.7.4441-e5eb5d5a1
    1.9.6.4429-23901a099
    1.9.6.4401-53fa66811
    1.9.6.4385-ef7796e43
    1.9.5.4339-46276db8d
    1.9.4.4325-1bf240a65

Running the latest Plex app on my phone although it has been like this for a couple of versions now. The only clue I have is that it started happening when I got the Oreo update on my phone (Sony Xperia XZ Premium). I didn't have issues before then. Note that other people on my Plex server who also use the Android app do not have any issues. It's just me. I've tried clearing data and stuff, it doesn't work.

@MovieFan.Plex running plex version 1.9.7.4441 and latest releases for plex android. I have a Moto G5 and one of my users has a J7 Prime. I tried stopping plex and deleting the cache folder. Didn't fix at all.

I have one user with android without issues.

Oh and seems the xbox client can't connect to my server anymore either. I don't see errors in my logs.

I'll need the Android app log too. Can you also provide some screenshots just so we are on the same page?

@MovieFan.Plex how can I get the logs in my app? I tried to enable network logging but seems to made no difference.. and going to my ip:port they say give "Failure: 404 Not Found".

There are 2 ways to get logs. See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201573117 for details.

1 - email them to yourself
2 - enable debug logging, open web browser to the URL provided, save the results as a text file

@MovieFan.Plex here it is. You can see that there are some errors, and it seems that the second android device having issues have got the thumbnails back, however my own android device is still not showing any thumbnails.

I have a nginx reverse proxy serving plex. I never had any issues before with same settings and everything the same. The thumbnails even appeared shortly in my device and then disappeared again. I didn't had issues with older versions either.

So it must be something plex changed.

Ok, I see errors with the app reaching your server through the reverse proxy. Unfortunately, I do not know anything about reverse proxies to say what is wrong. The only thing I can tell is that everything seems to be going through port 443 which is https only. Some calls the client makes are only http. I don't know how the reverse proxy handles that but it needs to be able to handle both secured and unsecured requests.

@Movie.Fan I'm 100% sure my nginx proxy is not the issue, as this only happens with some clients, only recently and I have other people using the same settings just fine.

It can handle both HTTP and HTTPS. If you use the correct port...notice it's tring to use :443 for HTTP requests. And I don't even want my phone doing HTTP requests at all because there is no reason to not use ssl in 2017.

The client should be using a https connection if it can create that type pf connection back to the server. In some cases it can't and will revert back to http. There is a setting in the app to control whether an insecured connection is allowed. Set this to never and it should force only https connections.

@MovieFan.Plex My phone already forbids http requests, or at least should be doing. But I have a friend that had the same issue with this setting turned off, and enabling it in the server solved it. So I'm lost here

I think there are many errors here, my android app doing HTTP requests even if it shouldn't, and using port :443 for HTTP requests anyway.
