Disabling Roku subtitles also disables Plex's forced subs

meshereemesheree Posts: 43Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Roku has a global subtitle enable/disable, which affects whether Plex shows the video's default subtitle. But disabling it also disables forced subs (for space-alien languages and whatnot).

... Is this something Plex devs can design around, or should I be complaining at Roku? LOL.

Roku REQUIRES that all apps respect the Roku settings no matter what the local app preferences are set to. That is regardless Plex's sub settings settings, forced, on or anything else if your Roku has subs set to off then subs will not play.

This is by Roku's specs and is part of their developer's agreement.

I do not know why they require that. To me it just seems that Roku wants to control more and more and this is just a small part of their desire for control.

Plex has lost me! I am moving all my local media consumption to Emby. There are things about Plex that are better than Emby but Plex has begun misleading their customers and even telling their users bald faced lies and that is unacceptable so I no longer use Plex for any media consumption.
I will NOT be lied to by a company I have any choice about using.
It has been a good ride but I now feel that I am the one being ridden.
Emby is NOT better software but they are a better company at this point.

Ah, okay. It's pretty annoying having to switch Roku subtitles on for Plex (so I can see the forced subs) and then off again for Netflix, Hulu et al. I wonder if they're burning in their forced subs. Sigh.

Guess I'll go complain at Roku about it! LOL.

Good luck with that. A year ago, or so, when Roku changed the game, complaints rolled in at Roku with no positive results.

It was almost like they didn't care... No... It was exactly like they didn't care.

You can quickly disable subs on other apps, usually, with the * button. That's about as good as it gets.
