Casting from Chrome to Chromecast, audio transcoded OK; from Android to Chromecast, not OK

EL RODEL ROD Posts: 11Members ✭✭

Hi.

Plex Server (Windows) -> Chromecast -> Stereo Receiver

Using Chrome Browser, casting to Chromecast, audio transcodes AC3->AAC, so there's audio output (expected) :) :

Using Android App, casting to Chromecast, no transcoding happens, it only shows Direct Play, so no audio (unexpected) :/ :

Direct Play is disabled on the server and I thought Chromecast.xml on the server controlled the transcoding behaviour globally.

Not sure what else to check.

Can anyone help?

Cheers.

    When casting, the video/audio compatibility is actually based on the casting device. From your Web it shows AC3 -> AAC and mobile it shows direct play, would would indicate that on your mobile device, you have audio support for AC3 enabled, so the cast is trying to also use AC3. Turn off AC3 support on your device before casting.

    Hi.

    Thanks for the reply.

    These are my settings:

    Is there anything else I need to check/uncheck?

    @MovieFan.Plex ? Hello? Can you help me?

    Ah, you are using the old Android Media player. This has different codec support and probably ignores those other settings, which is interfering with the determination of what can be played. Turn this off.

    @MovieFan.Plex what do you mean old Android Media player?

    I'm using the app from the Play Store, version 6.9.0.2683, dated November 13 2017.

    Is there a newer/better version of the app? Where can I find/download it?

    Also, when you mention "Turn this off", what needs to be turned off, and where?

    Thanks for your time.

    Cheers.

    OK, I think you mean the checkbox on the first screen.

    Will try right now and let you know.

    Cheers.

    Same result without the checkbox, DirectPlay only from the mobile app. :(

    @MovieFan.Plex any other ideas, am I using the wrong app, something else?

    Please try again, then provide me the log from the Android app and your PMS.

    Hi,

    I'm facing a very similar issue, likely the same root cause as the above, the fact that depending where I start a cast from gives me a different audio result.

    When starting a cast from my PC's Chrome browser (Linux), sound will be playing fine on my Home Cinema to which my chromecast 2 is connected (DD 5.1). Now if I start to cast the very same movie from the Android app (latest version installed a few hours ago), it will always just play in stereo ?!

    Video is impacted as well as canDirectStreamVideo turns from "enabled" when starting the cast from browser to "false" when from Android, but I haven't dug deeper on that front, I've just installed my first plex server a few hours ago).

    Anything new on this topic @MovieFan.Plex ?

    I've tried to play around with the profiles for Android and Chromecast setting :

      <Limitations>
        <UpperBound name="audio.channels" value="2" />
      </Limitations>

    to :

      <Limitations>
        <UpperBound name="audio.channels" value="6" />
      </Limitations>

    But that didn't make any difference.

    Sidenote : Why would Chromecast in its profile be limited to stereo btw ?

    Thanx, JP.

    In case it matters, I'm running also the latest server version, downloaded a few hours ago a well :

    OK, so I ran into this post while trying to figuring out why this was happening :

    [–]alkalinedevin 1 point 4 months ago
    I had the same issue and it drove me crazy. Downgraded the app to version 5.7 fixed it for me.

    So I went to grab an old 5.7 app which I managed to get form apk-mirror, and guess what, all working as it should now !

    So I guess the issue most obviously lies in the new android app ! Which kind of does make sense since casting from the browser worked, the server unlikely would have been the issue.

    @MovieFan.Plex could you pass on the message so this can get fixed in the current app ? Or even better, bring back to possibility to control quality within the android app ?

    I'll be running the old 5.7 for so long as I just can't watch 5.1 content on my 5.1 home cinema in stereo :neutral:

    Thanx, JP.
