I have a movie that has subtitles. They play fine on the VLC player but Plex doesn't pick them up. why?

Are these external subs or embedded?

Please post the mediainfo of the file.
    download mediainfo here
(pay attention during installation, it comes with a 'piggybacked' installer which asks to install additional crapware. Make sure to set/clear the right checkboxes!)

Once it is installed, analyse the file, then go to:
    File - Export - Text [x](Advanced mode)

I am having the same problem with Star Trek Discovery and embedded subtitles. No matter what I do to try different settings in PMS they will not stream to the TV. Any ideas?

And here for an idea of how the MKV files should look like.

Hi NewPlaza, thanks for your links. Still didn't help. I've tried everything. It plays properly on the computer in the PlexPlayer, but when streaming to the TV, it doesn't show. Not sure what I'm missing. I should ad, this only is a problem with embedded subtitles. If the srt file is external in the same folder with same name as title, never a problem. So, still wish I could figure this out.

Could be the tv is not supported for subs. Not sure. What TV app are you using?

  • Pitman33Pitman33 Posts: 46Members ✭✭

TV app? Not sure what that is. If the subs are external, no problem. It's the embedded ones that don't stream. Do TV's need a special app for that? It's an LG.

The Plex app on the LG may need the subtitles 'burned in'.
Find out if your tv model is supported by the 3rd party player 'XPlay' and get it.

I went through the LG app store on the TV and no sign of Xplay. Does that mean I can't stream embedded subtitles to the TV?

  • OttoKernerOttoKerner Posts: 29,609Members, Plex Pass, Plex Ninja Plex Ninja

I am not sure it is available in the app store directly.

But we still haven't seen a mediainfo of your movie file.
Nor did we determine if Plex server sees the subtitle in it or not.
So it may be a whole different issue we're dealing with here.

When you inspect the movie in Plex Web, are the subtitles shown and can they be selected or not?

Media info attached. Hope that helps. It's a TV show, Star Trek Discovery. Subtitles show in Plex Web on the computer. They don't stream to my LG TV unless the subs are external. Can't figure out what settings in PMS for embedded subs to work. I've tried every setting possible, I think.

    How old is the TV?
I see that this file is using 10 reference frames in the video stream and 'header stripping', which may upset some older player chips.

I know that for older Samsung TV's there was even a software to extract the subtitles and make the rest of the MKV compatible.
It might still work, give it a try

    It's LG 55LV5400 http://www.lg.com/ca_en/tvs/lg-55LV5400-led-tv - 2011

I got the MKVToolNix program, and loaded the file into it. But can't for the life of me find any kind of repair button.

MKVToolnix is not the repair software itself. It is a prerequsite for the repair software.
The download link for the repair software is at the bottom of that posting.

Hey, thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I did the "repair" with that program, and didn't make a difference. Why is this so hard? I guess I'll just have to delete the embedded subs and dl external subs for these then. But, really Plex should allow me to stream embedded subs to TV. How hard can that be?

  • OttoKernerOttoKerner Posts: 29,609Members, Plex Pass, Plex Ninja Plex Ninja

The software was supposed to not only repair your MKV file but also extract the embedded subtitle. Didn't you find a *.srt file beside the repaired mkv?

I extracted all the subs now. Only way to go it seems.
