Sync stopped working

Thanks all for the great work on Plex so far. I've been a user & subscriber for YEARS and love it!!

Recently my sync to my Windows Surface tablet (running the Plex app) stopped. It reports "Server Not available" I checked the network logging and it seems to be trying to reach my server via the private IP. Is there anyway I can force it to try the public IP every time? Also, are there other items I should be checking to troubleshoot this? It has worked for more than a year, it kind of suddenly stopped. Plex still plays fine locally or remotely, and if I select a movie or episode and choose "download" it downloads the file which plays just fine too,
