AAC Audio fix

FatalmuzzaFatalmuzza Posts: 45Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Though I'd post this incase some find it useful....

There is an ever increasing amount of content using surround AAC. You may find the sound getting mapped down to 2 channels, and incorrectly at that such as the center channel in the right speaker for example.

The core issue is that Plex seems to insist on downsampling ACC. This is totally unnecessary as ATV handles this audio format. This can be fixed by the end user....

On windows edit C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles\tvOS.xml

Remove this....

<VideoAudioCodec name="aac">
  <Limitations>
    <UpperBound name="audio.channels" value="2" />
  </Limitations>
</VideoAudioCodec>
  • You will likely need to likely copy the file to somewhere, modify it and copy it back allowing admin.
  • Exit/close Plex server and start it up again.
  • Enjoy AAC passthrough to your ATV!
  • Alas, each time the server updates to a new version it reverts the changes requiring you to do the mod again. Maybe someday the Plex devs will tweak to it and implement a perma-fix.

Cheers.
