Has the random windows crash not been fixed?

HerdOnHerdOn Members, Plex Pass Posts: 9 Plex Pass

Plex would crash randomly (~10hrs or so), so I went back to an old release for the last 6 weeks. I want to say it was one from last summer. I can't remember exactly what version, but it was fine. I read in the changelog that a server crash was fixed in the most recent beta release. Well needless to say, I'm back to my same issues. Tray icon disappearing, full blown random crash of plex. Is there any work around besides installing an old version? Thanks.

Sorry, I've been extremely busy changing jobs.

It appears that myself and @puddness are experiencing the same issues from what I can tell in their thread.

I will say that my server 2012r2 machine is running on esxi 6.5. I usually launch PMS through an RDP session.

I think we might be onto something. I'll try launching it through the web console after next crash.

If you would like for me to reply on their thread, instead please let me know.

A threads leak has been identified which in effect becomes a memory leak. See latest updates to http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/310320/pms-crashing-version-1-11-3-4803-windows-7

I am running Plex at the latest version on fully updated Windows 10 and I have zero crashes over the last year or so. I cannot remember before that but I do not remember ever having a server crash since I have been running Plex.

As a disclaimer I run NOTHING on my server except Plex and a few support programs. I do not believe that a server should ever have additional regular duties. Also, for best practices, I reboot or restart everything on my network weekly or so.

I think that 95% or more "crashes" of Plex are due to interactions with other unrelated programs that really don't belong on a server.

The server instance itself doesn't crash, just plex. I read the forums about a month ago and it was a known issue that just hadn't been addressed if I remember correctly. I'm running a server 2012 r2 instance that has been perfect up until a few months ago.

    @HerdOn

I can see memory allocation errors started

Mar 12, 2018 18:22:24.059 [9836] ERROR - Thread: Uncaught exception running async task which was spawned by thread 7972: boost::thread_resource_error: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format

    and

    Mar 12, 2018 18:26:41.928 [4608] ERROR - Format [JPEG] - Insufficient memory (case 4)

The server I believe was started at Mar 11, 2018 22:32:22 - so the issues started less than 24 hours later.

It is either that there is a memory leak leading to the Plex Media Server.exe process reaching the 2Gb limit for the process or there was shortage of memory within windows

Investigations into memory issues are fairly complex. I do have an investigation ongoing at the moment with another user where memory runs out after about 4 days. I do not know if this is similar or different issue

We had other users with similar errors in the past that was found to be, for some reason, caused by Bitdefender running

So that or other security software could be looked into first to see if it is caused by that.

Otherwise we would need similar investigation and at first I need to see the Plex Media Server.exe process memory usage view over time and from launch up to the crash through this Microsoft SysInternals VMMap tool
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/vmmap

SO it would be shutting down Plex Media Server,
Then launching Plex Media Server and after that launching VMMap and opening the Plex Media Server.exe process in VMMap and setting auto refresh every 10 seconds and clicking timeline

When the issue arises, click refresh within VMMAp View menu and capturing screenshot and saving the VMMap through file SaveAS with type as Data mmp file
and zipping the mmp file and uploading zip to dropbox and adding the server logs and sharing link

Bitdefender is not running on this particular machine.

I'll get the sysinternals stuff running asap.

As always, thanks for your help

I need to establish if it is the same issue as http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/310320/pms-crashing-version-1-11-3-4803-windows-7 which I am now going deeper into

What security software is running ?

could you also include the output from SysInternals ListDLLs for the Plex Media Server.exe process
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/listdlls
