[Ubuntu 16.04]: Issue with server disappearing from plex.tv (several times)

Plex Version: Plex Media Server v1.11.3.4803-c40bba82e

Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue.... My plex server keeps becoming unreachable from plex.tv, even when I restart the server it will not show as available in plex.tv. It randomly drops and disconnects, I'm not sure what causing it. Any ideas or know where I should look further? To fix it, normally I just have to follow these steps to reconnect the server again:

====

  • Open a Terminal window or your command prompt
  • Enter the following command (substituting the IP address of your server as appropriate):
  • ssh ip.address.of.server -L 8888:localhost:32400
  • Open a browser window
  • Type http://localhost:8888/web into the address bar

====

Some of the log is attached.

May I have the complete set of logs? (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs or a .tar.gz of the Logs directory)

The file you provided only shows me that PMS thinks it crashed for some reason. It does not include what preceded it for me to diagnose

    Hey Chuck,

Thanks for the response. Is there a way to upload the logs somewhere thats not public?

    Thanks for the logs.

    Finding a few things.

    A. You have too many plug-ins running. The default is 6. PMS can be customized to run up to 10 concurrently however some of those include the Plex required plug-ins (like the WebClient and Framework). Should they get shut down then PMS stops responding to all but things like Roku/AppleTV. PMS does try to prevent that but a rogue plug-in can actually push it out.

    Mar 12, 2018 10:35:59.593 [0x7fe5e0fff700] DEBUG - Plug-in limit of 6 exceeded.
    Mar 12, 2018 10:35:59.593 [0x7fe5e0fff700] DEBUG - * Bringing down the older plug-in: com.plexapp.agents.htbackdrops.

Something is commanding PMS to stop.

Shown below you see signal 15. Systemd sends signal 15 or any script can. Pms then goes down and then restarts somehow.

Do you have a script running somewhere? Did you modify your systemd service file?

    Chuck,

The signal 15 was me restarting the service, to see if it would return to plex.tv.

Regarding the plugins, I don't believe I currently have any installed. When I go in under the server, settings, plugins, theres nothing there. Where else can I check for plugins? This should be a pretty vanilla installation.

Would you please look at /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins and see how many entries you have there?

Something is making PMS think you have valid .bundle files there. This is the only location PMS scans for them.

Since PMS is dropping from myplex (plex.tv) and we're running out of rollover log files (each restart / 5 MB causes a roll over), would you consider increasing from the default to perhaps 10 or 15?

To do this. edit Preferences.xml (under Plex Media Server) with PMS stopped and insert the preference LogNumFiles="10" or whatever value you decide.

The forum limit for uploading is about 35 MB and ZIPped log files are very small, values of 20,25,30, are quite reasonable in difficult cases.

I want to see where Plex goes away and why. If it's running normally and then notice a time when it's not present, grabbing the logs and backtracking will allow me to find the event.

    Chuck,

    /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins# ls
    Services.bundle

The "Services.bundle" folder is the only folder listed.

I increased the log files too LogNumFiles="15" and restarted plex.

I did notice these messages in the log, these wouldn't have anything to do with it would they?

Mar 12, 2018 14:43:05.044 [0x7f51337fc700] WARN - NAT: PMP, got an error: Not Supported by gateway.

As of right now, everything is working fine but I can reattach the logs when it crashes/disappears again if you'd like. Still curious on your input regarding the plugins though.

    Thanks again!

Only the first level listing of /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins matters .

What you're seeing in the above is the list of available plug-ins.

That makes sense. So isn't it weird that Plex is reporting I have more than 6, but the folder shows 0?

  • ChuckPAChuckPA Members, Plex Pass, Plex Ninja, Plex Team Member Posts: 22,850 Plex Team Member

    Yes.. Very weird.

You should only have the Services.bundle which contains 138 entries in the Service Sets directory. This is the list of plug-ins you could select from.

I'm wondering, how old is your PMS Library' ?? Could your Bundle be a holdover or PMS not have permission to update it (owned by plex:plex`) ?
