Create SSL certificates for Plex Server with Windows Active Directory Certificate Services

gloveman71gloveman71 Members, Plex Pass Posts: 9 Plex Pass

All my servers run in a Windows 2016 server Active Directory domain with Certificate Services installed.. I run the Plex Server on a Windows 10 Pro server which is part of the domain. I would like to create the security SSL certificates for Plex server with ADCS and would like to know if there are any setup guides or step by step instructions for doing this. I create and maintain all my own certificates, and would like to keep this the same with Plex.
Hope someone can assist!!
Thanx for any help,
Jim Glover

Keep in mind, if you are reverse proxying this will work... but you cannot apply the cert to the plex server settings as this will not be an externally verifiable certificate from a root authority. Deploying and maintaining certificates through AD is lengthy and there are many tutorials online, but are out of scope of plex directly.

    Best wishes!

    Storage (SAN): Ubuntu 16.04 using NFS with 160TB (192TB / 2 RAID6 Pools MDADM > LVM > EXT4)

Thanx for the information, So I would better off getting the certificate from the partner that Plex has setup??

    Thanx again,

IMO... the easiest, and free way currently is to use letsencrypt. (assuming you own a domain name). If you dont there are plenty of places that will give you a free subdomain.

Yes, I have a domain name, can you point me to the documents that show how to implement this> The one I am looking at now is: https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

    Again, Thanx,

a quick cursory search for "Windows IIS with LetsEncrypt" gave me THIS promising article.

Im a linux guy but theoretically you would set up IIS to listen for the FQDN of whatever you want, set up a reverse proxy in IIS or redirect, make sure your 80/443 ports are open to IIS on that server, use letsencrypt to verify the url and give you a cert, then apply the cert in the server settings at settings > server > network (filling out Custom certificate location, Custom certificate encryption key, and Custom certificate Domain)
