Ubuntu 18.04 LTS initial issues warning

edited April 30 in Linux

This announcement is to alert those considering early adoption of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS that it behaving erratically in certain environments making it unsuitable for early adoption.

As of this opening announcement, when used in a SSD system on an intel NUC,

  1. Apparent startup dependency fault in systemd allows Plex Media Server to start before networking is ready. This fault also allows network drive mounts to be attempted before network is ready. This results in failure for both
  2. If system faults and OS ‘recovery’ is needed, if recovery has failed, there is a high likelihood of trashing the root FS
  3. Logical volume GUI administration package missing from online repositories

Further updates as they are discovered.

Thanks to Achilles for researching this in depth.

Problems are seen with the following controller on 18.04 LTS but not 16.04.4 LTS:

Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (2) I219-LM (rev 31)

Its a regression for the time being with the kernel drivers. 18.04 LTS with the following controller is perfectly fine.

Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)
