Plex won't seem to close any subprocesses? Stops working after running for a couple hours.

trsqltvtrsqltv Posts: 11Members ✭✭

Hey Guys, the title says it all.

Pretty much the server becomes unusable after a certain period of time, this is generally a couple hours. After it gets to this point, even if I ask it to refresh metadata or scan library for changes, it just runs forever without making any progress. I've tried optimizing the database without much effect/outcome. The only way I'm able to get it out of this state is by restarting the server. Doing sudo service plexmediaserver restart restarts the server but doesn't fix the issue (output of sudo service plexmediaserver status after trying to stop plex: https://hastebin.com/rudaqofivi.vbs ).

Obviously, here's some more information/log dump/status info after starting the server and letting it run for some time:

Plex Server Version = 1.13.1.5063
Systemd Status Output = https://hastebin.com/usoqajinus.js
plexmediaserver Service File = https://hastebin.com/tofizigoxu.ini

Server Specs:
Storage: 480GB SSD
CPU: Dual Xeon E5-2670
Memory: 32GB
Connection: 1GB

I've verified /var/lib/plexmediaserver is owned by plex:plexand has 755 permissions.

Also attached is the Log output after stopping and restarting the server.

Any one with any experience would be appreciated!

Thank you!

So I ended up restarting, switching OS's and trying from scratch and had a bit more luck. I guess Plex doesn't play well with Ubuntu 18.04.

    Thanks for the intermittent help!

Your database is a mess given you have dual Xeon E5. It should never take this long.

    Libaries -> ... -> Optimize Database

You might also want to enable automatic optimization Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks

What's happening is Plex's processes are trying to communicate and timeout with each other. Eventually it will get all jammed up.

    Your logs show:

    Hey!

I've been optimizing my Plex database almost every time I do something in Plex (Scan Library Files, Analyze Library, Refresh Metadata, Fix a Match etc) and also optimize before running something as well and keep running into this issue.

I also have everything enabled under Scheduled Tasks:

Could this be related to the database itself and/or sqlite?

    Thank you.

How many items do you have indexed, in total?
Is the Library on a HD, SSD, or elsewhere?

    Current Library:

    • Music: 4000 songs
    • TV Shows: 900 episodes
    • Movies: 150 movies

All the content is stored on Read Only drives that are hosted in the cloud. However, Plex itself and its metadata + database + files are hosted off an SSD.

Apologies, I've attached the logs. I haven't purged them since the last time I uploaded them so their might be a lot of older logs.

I also don't seem to be able to edit past messages but that's no biggie.

Did you put your Transcoder Temp directory in RAM /dev/shm/Transcode as the logs show?

I would like you to conduct a test for me.

    1. Stop PMS
    2. In /var/lib/plexmediaserver rename Library to Library.prev
    3. Start PMS
    4. Stand up a new, bare minimal server with no extra 'tweaks' (e.g. transcoder temp) and only one media library (a small one) .
    5. when you see all metadata has been retrieved and nothing is playing or was added (no plug-ins or cert), grab the logs again and attach.

    Hey!

So I did that, created a library with 4 movies and grabbed the logs. They should be attached to this post.

Also, I updated the server to 1.13.2.5102.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the logs.
There are no errors nor any unexpected results for a fresh installation with database migrations active as PMS starts.

Can you show me which processes (wide view) are left running? Some do stay running

When you mean Wide-View, I'm guessing you want the full text for the systemd processes:

    To confirm please:

    1. This shows the processes which are live (running) and also visible in ps -efl when PMS stops responding?
    2. If so, did you manually grab a tar or ZIP archive of the Logs directory? ( so we catch it in the act )

    Hey Chuck,

I haven't gotten the Plex Server to stop working/streaming/etc with the 4-movie Test library I captured. I deleted my current library and created a new Test library with a couple more movies (about ~20) and then repeated all the steps you outlined above:

    1. Systemd Status (on first startup): https://pastebin.com/EP1mfs8W
    2. Systemd Status (after first library scan/update): https://pastebin.com/B9DG2jSz
    3. Output of ps -efl (after first library scan/update): https://pastebin.com/76RKSZhA
    4. Logs after First Library Scan: Plex Logs Auto Export.zip
    5. Logs after First Library Scan (manually captured as a tar.gz): Plex Logs Manual Export.tar.gz

To reiterate, the server doesn't seem to break with the current library, its once I add bigger libraries that stuff breaks. Right now, with the current library of just under 20 movies (18), the server seems to work fine. However, if I point it at my actual movie library (same happens with TV Shows and Music) , then it starts doing what I described above.

You have something bizarre happening and I can't find it.
I am beginning to think it's at the OS itself. Being Ubuntu 18.04 it's VERY likely that's the root cause.
I've been seeing the stupidest problems and I can't do anything about them cause they are in the kernel

Have you gotten any Ubuntu updates yet?

@ChuckPA I should have all the latest Ubuntu18.04 updates downloaded. I regularly make sure to apt update & apt upgrade. I've also got the Canonical Livepatch system enabled just in case.

Could perhaps uninstalling/removing specific updates help?

What's strange is I was experiencing very similar issues on Ubuntu 16.04 before wiping the server and starting over.

EDIT: I also have this upgrade line in my apt update:
W: Conflicting distribution: https://downloads.plex.tv/repo/deb public InRelease (expected public but got )

So what can I do? What could be done to help either fix this issue or better understand what and why.

I was experiencing almost exactly the same issues running with a similar setup on Ubuntu 16.04x so I'm not really sure.

Thanks for the help thus far, hopefully there is a fix or explanation. :|

So I ended up restarting, switching OS's and trying from scratch and had a bit more luck. I guess Plex doesn't play well with Ubuntu 18.04.

    Thanks for the intermittent help!

Actually, it's 18.04. It's so fresh out of the box that we're finding bugs everywhere. It should settle down after the first major update

Last night I had to craft an NFS automount service for one of the Developers. Seems it was forgotten in the nfs-common package distribution.
