Direct play vs. transcoding of CD quality and hi-res files on Sonos

It appears that Plex/Sonos supports direct play for 16-bit files:

24-bit files get transcoded. That's understandable due to the Sonos hardware limitations. However, I'm surprised that it's being transcoded to AAC. My understanding is that it would take the bitrate way down to 320kbs or something. Can someone confirm how hi-res files are transcoded? Is the bitrate transcoded to 1,411 kbps, or lower?

We feel your pain and have an open issue for transcoding hi-res lossless to compatible lossless. Unfortunately I can't comment on a timeline.

Will this also solve lossy transcoding of CD-quality lossless files?
