FEATURE REQUEST: Custom Library Icons

nebheadnebhead Posts: 81Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Would be great to get custom library icons so that I can quickly discern between the different libraries that we have when using the Roku.  For example, "Kid TV Shows" from "TV Shows", etc.

At least having a broader set of icons to choose from would be nice.

Yep, totally agreed. It's something that we'd look to add at the server so that it worked across all Plex clients rather than just the Roku. Definitely on our radar.

If you're really desperate for it, I think there are a couple of threads in the PMS forum where people have talked about how to change a value in the DB to point at a URL for the icon. YMMV.

I too would love to see this.  I have separate sections for DISNEY and JAMES BOND movies, so would love to be able to assign a custom icon for each.

I was able to view the xml using (http://localhost:32400/library/sections) which had the path to the icon, but I couldn't find where the xml file was to edit it.  However, I was able to accomplish this by using the below guide and sql editor.

Awesome! Now I've gotta find some suitable icons, and I'll give this a shot. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Lane03!

Don't thank me, thank the person who wrote that great guide.  To find pictures just do a Google search.  I would suggest keeping the images around 300 x 300, as that seems to be what the default icons are sized at.  Here is what I used for James Bond and Disney.

+1 on this for a feature! I just got a little Roku 3 (already have a WD TV Live Plus), and decided to play with Plex. I LOVE how it adds my movies, and pulls in rating information. I can't stand not being able to assign unique icons to each section to help visually identify quickly which I'm going into. Due to lack of Parental control, I keep my movies separated out. Would be great to just have them show my custom icons.

    Schuyler,

I use to do this on the USB Media Channel and my family loved it. I'm going to try this method and see how it works, but do you have a hex code for the background color of the plex channel? I'm assuming it's between #666666 and #333333.

The main background color is #363636. I don't imagine you'd need to know any other colors, but the colors are generally listed in the theme attributes, which you can see here.

Oh, but I should also mention that as long as you're using the latest versions of everything, you should be able to use a PNG with transparency. So no need to worry about the background yourself in that case.

That is good to know. So is PLEX transcoding the image now or has Roku decided to support transparency?

I believe Plex is transcoding the image

    Server: 2009 Mac Mini C2D
Clients: Mac, Windows, Roku, Roku2, iOS, Android, PleXBMC,

Yeah, we have to transcode it, still no transparency support on grid screens in the Roku. In the most recent PMS update we finally got things working with a supplied background color. So you can use a transparent PNG that will look good on all the platforms that do support transparency, and still get the right background color on the Roku.

Wow, that was pretty easy to do. Tedious, but pretty easy. And in my opinion, looks a lot better now. :)

Thanks for the instructions on how to do it everyone. They were easy to follow. :)

The Icon Pack I used can be found by following the url link below. The pack I used was labeled as "Xenzer's MediaBrowser Icons" (second Icon Pack listed on the page). I didn't have to do anything to them other than load them up to my photobucket account, and then link to the one's I wanted to use. Very simple, and they look pretty cool. :)

Those are the ones I ended up using - wish they had a transparent background though!

That's strange? The pack I downloaded were all .png's with a  transparent background. I'm sure of this because I opened a few up in photoshop and could see they had transparent backgrounds before I ever used them. I also used the included .psd template and created a new one that I needed myself, and the .psd is designed with a transparent background as well. I'm actually about to create a few more that I need in a little while. The background looks great on my Roku's.

I'm running into a small problem with this. I redesigned a few of the icons I originally setup the other day. When I go to change them, for some reason it's not picking up the new icon, even though it has an entirely different name. I even tried deleting the image from my photobucket account, and keeps showing the old image I setup a couple of days ago. I'm guessing that the Plex Server is caching this somewhere after first read. Does anyone know where this is so I can go in and delete the one's I updated, and force a new download?
