Power users - edit Plex database directly

Plex 0.8 at least (can't comment on Plex 0.9 which is not yet out) uses the same SQLite databases as XBMC. SQLite is a widely used database format, for example Apple use it themselves on the iPhone as well.

For those of a daring disposition, you can use an SQLite compatible database tool to edit these databases directly. I had a look around and there are a number of such tools (for Mac) some of which are commercial, but I found Navicat Lite to a be a reasonable free tool which you can download here http://www.navicat.com/download/download.html

As an example, I used it to edit some already scraped (via IMDB) movies which due to a bug in an earlier version of the scraper did not include the film year. Rather than rescraping them all with a fixed version of the scraper, I was able to use Navicat to edit the records in the database and fill in by hand the missing year. You could also use this to manually enter film plot text - not all entries on IMDB have such text.

The Plex database is at the following path

~/Library/Application Support/Plex/userdata/Database/MyVideos34.db

    Try this one: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php?/topic/11837-plexdbeditor/
It allows to edit the data without understanding the structure of Plex' database and sql.

I've also used Base and MesaSQLite, both of which have trial versions which work just fine for those who just want to get in and change a little data here and there.

But always remember, editing this way is not supported, and you should always back up before you try anything.

I have used that (and the XBMC version) but they do not provide access to the Year field.

Navicat Lite does not need a lot of SQL knowledge, it is just a matter of clicking and editing. You don't need to create SQL search strings like some other tools.

I tried all the suggestions on this page, none of them give you any power at all over genre editing.

This one is the best:  http://www.eagleware.net/Files/plexeditor.aspx

I'm running the most current Plex Server on my mac, and ran Plex Editor 1.4 on Windows 7 via VMWare.

The Plex database on a mac is here:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db

but on the VMWare (Windows) side it looks like this:

    \\vmware-host\Shared Folders\MAC-USER-ACCT-NAME\Library\Application Support\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Databases\com.plexapp.plugins.library.db

(assuming you set up folder sharing in VMWare)

Watch the video for the editor tool, it helps a lot.

Why does the Plex Editor only show the movies library and not things like TV Shows and music? Am I missing something or is that in another database? I've got some incorrectly flagged songs and I can't seem to correct them no matter what I've tried.

I don't see an answer to this yet.  Has anyone found out how to make Plex Editor show Music.  I would love to edit the Genres in the Music database and get rid of all the crap in there
