Media Server Not Found - but then it is.

t_wysockit_wysocki Posts: 28Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

I have the server set up on my HTPC and I can log into the client with no problem from that machine. If I log into the client from another machine, I get "Media Server Not Found". BUT, if I just click the "home" icon, it comes up fine. Then going to settings, I see the server is signed in. Why do I get that message?

    I think it is all timing - and may be the use of secure connections has a bearing.

    Do you need to click on the Home icon ? Does it not automatically refresh the screen when it actually succeeds in finding the server?

    If the problem does not resolve itself without you hitting on the Home icon, get some logs and can see what is happening
    As a test enable verbose logging on Plex Web App on the machine you are connecting from :
    Settings / Web / Show Advanced / Debug / Vebose Logging and save changes

    Then reproduce the problem ie get the Media Server Not Found and where it stays that way. Wait a few seconds in case it does refresh
    Get a screenshot of the full screen including url and time of day
    Then get the Plex Web log: Settings / Web / Show Advanced / Debug / View Logs / Select All / copy and paste to text file and save

    Then click on the Home icon which should find the server
    Get a screenshot of the full screen including url and time of day
    Then get the Plex Web log again: Settings / Web / Show Advanced / Debug / View Logs / Select All / copy and paste to text file and save

    Attach screenshots and the 2 log files

    I've attached the files you asked for. While I was working with it yesterday I got a message about insecure connections, which I allowed since my machines are on the same private network. My Galaxy S5 phone with Firefox has the same issues it appears. There's a message saying it can't connect to the server, but then I click the message and it shows me my media.

    Can't find any errors in log1.txt or log2.txt
    Was logging in Plex Web enabled before you got the initial Media Server Not Found error message?

    what we have at the beginning of log1.txt relating to server discovery / connection:

      {
        "type": "navigation",
        "route": "section",
        "args": [
          "f895742e0f7277ab08331ab1c19bc7662d8d507b",
          "3",
          null,
          null
        ],
        "fragment": "#!/server/f895742e0f7277ab08331ab1c19bc7662d8d507b/section/3",
        "time": "2015-12-14T23:00:05.120Z"
      },
      {
        "type": "ajax",
        "url": "translations/en.json",
        "status": 200,
        "response": "{}",
        "time": "2015-12-14T23:00:05.123Z"
      },
      {
        "type": "log:message",
        "level": 4,
        "message": "[Connections] nuc connected at https://192-168-1-105.1ba9ab9a04b84101aeeb17680173bc63.plex.direct:32400/",
        "time": "2015-12-14T23:00:05.180Z"
      },
      {
        "type": "log:message",
        "level": 2,
        "message": "[Connections] Active connection to nuc is https://192-168-1-105.1ba9ab9a04b84101aeeb17680173bc63.plex.direct:32400",
        "time": "2015-12-14T23:00:05.183Z"
      },

    No indication of an error in the log and i would have expected an error status logged

    The url for the screen with the error was probably this if it was at the time the fragment is showing in the log
    https://app.plex.tv/web/app#!/server/f895742e0f7277ab08331ab1c19bc7662d8d507b/section/3

    Does this work in a browser? would it give errors sometimes?

    Does the screen auto refresh itself if you do nothing after getting the error?

    Sorry for not showing the full url in my screenshot. I just pasted the url you mention above into my browser and it brings up the "not found" screen, which just sits there forever. Then clicking the home icon takes me into the server with no problem on Chrome and FIrefox.

    we would need the Plex Media Server.log - may be the server identifier string is wrong or there is a problem loading that section

    Getting the xml from this request would tell us if the server identifier is picked up from plex.tv
    https://plex.tv/pms/resources.xml?includeHttps=1

    and the Plex Media Server.log with debug logging enabled and after restarting the server and trying to reproduce the problem would help troubleshoot the problem

    Just to add could also compare the server identifier in the xml from plex.tv with the identifier returned directly in the xml from the server through this request
    http://localhost:32400 on the server itself

    After restarting computer with logging verbose, here's the xml:
    <MediaContainer size="1"> <Device name="nuc" product="Plex Media Server" productVersion="0.9.12.19.1537-f38ac80" platform="Windows" platformVersion="6.1 (Build 7601)" device="PC" clientIdentifier="47feccbc1b4ae73b122fb026adebfebc7d879965" createdAt="1449088765" lastSeenAt="1450148862" provides="server" owned="1" httpsRequired="0" synced="0" publicAddressMatches="1" presence="1"> <Connection protocol="https" address="192.168.1.105" port="32400" uri="https://192-168-1-105.1ba9ab9a04b84101aeeb17680173bc63.plex.direct:32400" local="1"/> </Device> </MediaContainer>

    And log file is attached. Same behavior as before.

    Here is the identifier returned directly in the xml from the server through this request

    Thanks for the info. The server identifier is clearly 47feccbc1b4ae73b122fb026adebfebc7d879965 in the xml from the server, from plex.tv and in the Plex Media Server log file.

    So not sure where Plex Web App earlier got this identifier from f895742e0f7277ab08331ab1c19bc7662d8d507b - perhaps some old cached information that is out of date. I will have to refer this to the pex web team

    Ahhh! I believe you've got it! I was starting from a bookmark: https://app.plex.tv/web/app#!/server/f895742e0f7277ab08331ab1c19bc7662d8d507b/section/3

    I had bookmarked a non-dashboard page and somehow the server identifier had changed. What could cause it to change? If I just go to https://app.plex.tv/web/app then it works fine! Is there any way to start in "Movies" page instead of the dashboard?

    So sorry to take your time on this. It was my newbie mistake, but I wouldn't have solved it without your help!

    I know this thread is a little old, but I have seen this happening more and more. I have to log out, close the window, and then go directly to plex.tv, log in, and hit the launch button for it to work again.

    You could raise a new topic providing full screenshots (showing error / url and time of day) together with corresponding diagnostic logs from Plex Web App and the Plex Media Server - after you look into these support pages and follow the advice given
