Why is Plex Classic so much faster than official Roku app

In every way

Starting to play media

Literally the new app is slower. On my Roku XS, 3, and Premier+. Why is that?

Because Plex went with "pretty" over functional and they forced their Roku developer(s) to produce the same fluffy frilly interface as most of the other Plex apps.

If you want a real snappy and still fairly advanced user interface you might want to install RARFlix.
    https://github.com/ljunkie/rarflix/blob/master/README.md

RARFlix is no longer being developed, like Plex Classic, because Roku hired the developer and cut off his...

Thanks. I'm familiar with rarflix. However my intent was to ask questions and understand, not to bash plex.

    Where's the fun in that?

Basically the current Plex app does so much trying to be pretty that the overhead makes it slower. Whenever an interface increases its use of graphics it naturally slows down. Also there are a number of added "features" that are used by a few people but that introduce overhead that impacts everyone.

If we don't correct the child (Plex) - it grows up to be an axe-murderer (or President), but I feel Plex has already passed beyond what could be it's formative years.

With every update to this wonderful new world we're living in (The Plexiverse as we know it) the apps and clients continue to slow (grind to a near halt). The latest and most noticed casualty - Plexweb. I am using a server in a box with an AMD FX-8350 (8900 PM - 8 cores, no waiting) with an AMD Radeon R9-380 Graphics Card that will chew through Doom 2016 like a hot knife through buttah.

I have no more than 150 items (some shows may have more episodes) in ANY library and when running Plexweb and inspecting Libraries Plexweb will grind to a halt, refusing to load poster images.

Plex has gone so far around the bend in their quest for 'beauty' their product has almost become unusable.

RARflix and Classic fly through the media server - everything else suffers to some degree. Good luck getting this new app to run on an XS, but my Roku 3 still performs adequately - albeit a bit slowly. God Help my AFTV - 'cause it's pretty clear Plex can't do anything about it. I don't even have the new app on my Roku 2 HD as that would be madness. RARflix is the only thing keeping that unit in service as far as Plex is concerned.

I have often said Plex needs to develop a 'Plex Lite' version of their apps (same taste - less filling) then monitor the downloads of this version that will prove once and for all what users really want from Plex. I have no hope this will ever happen because users and Plex stopped traveling down the same road a long time ago. Plex has a plan for what Plex wants Plex to be and users aren't really a part of that mission any longer.

If Plex's Roku app developer wasn't employed by Plex (thank the Maker he is though - The Roku app is the only thing holding this mess together) there is little doubt he would have already developed an app far superior to the one he's forced to work on now.

I can dream about RARflix 2017. Man, that would be SWEET!

The classic app is built into the Roku standard interface. Simply put, the new app uses custom pages, which is why it looks different than all those apps that look just like Classic Plex. Custom pages allow Plex to do things differently, and to do things that they couldn't in the standard Roku UI. Additional capability comes with additional code, which can cause slower performance.

Could I ask someone from plex to respond here? Surely they see the performance. Long load times, even on the newest Roku boxes with wired connections.

    You can ask.

This is where I stir the pot the other direction and say that my Rokus, both local and remote, are quite snappy accessing my PMS box of 1200+ movies. (All wired of course)

  • friedflixfriedflix Members, Plex Pass Posts: 2,012 Plex Pass

Lol. No way. Post a video ;). All my Rokus are wired.

Maybe you could put something more around exactly what "long load time" means in your own situation.

Me, I can go from starting the Roku Plex app to home screen in about 5-10 seconds (not including PIN entering time). From there to "Recently Added" or selecting an item to play also in the same timeframe. Holds true for all the clients in my house; Smart TVs, PCs, and usually even tablets and phones.

    I'm also religious about DirectPlay.

  • friedflixfriedflix Members, Plex Pass Posts: 2,012 Plex Pass

My Load times with the official app are 10-20 seconds for library pages, initial load and playing items. Less than half that for Plex Classic for the first two, a third those times when loading to actually play media. It is exceedingly obvious that the official app runs demonstrably slower than Plex classic.

That sounds about right. RARflix is 2-5 seconds on the load, almost instantaneous on libraries. AFTV falls into a rift in space-time. Plexweb is still trying to load posters from when I clicked a library last week (slight exaggeration). The server is wired all my devices are WiFi. Roku 3 and AFTV sitting side by side on 5G, Roku 2HD on 2.4G downstairs. RARflix zooms on it.

@friedflix may need to optimize the database. That's never a 'bad idea' even if it doesn't help much all the time. I can do that around here in about 15 seconds. If it's taking 20 minutes or longer - there are issues and it ain't the new app causing them.

If I find something transcoding - it won't when I"m done with it.

You should have that enabled in Scheduled tasks - if not, you're making a big mistake.

How does one do that as a scheduled task? Thought it had to be kicked off manually.

    1) sign in: https://my.roku.com/index
    2) https://www.rokuguide.com/private-channels/plex-classic
    and/or
    3) click RARFlix link in my signature - if you want to give that a go (still my favorite).
