DTS Audio and black screen

ddivitaddivita Members Posts: 8 ✭✭

I am not sure if this is a plex server or Amazon fire TV issue, but when DTS audio tracks are selected the video is not plating back. This just started happening in the last couple weeks. If I switch the audio track to Dolby Digital it works.

I want to add, in the past files with DTS audio played back fine. It was just last month we watched Top Gun and it has a DTS audio track. Today we tried to play the file and no go.

Turn on Information Overlay and reveal what it's telling you when this happens:
Play something (anything), hit OK, arrow right to 'Gear', arrow down and enable 'Information Overlay'.

Now play one of these misbehaving files and let us know what Information Overlay is telling you about it when you hit OK. Some onscreen info will appear. Direct Play or Transcoding and if Transcoding the reason for the Transcode.

That may or may not reveal something useful - let's hope it does.

Alternately provide the XML info for a misbehaving file:
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201998867-Investigate-Media-Information-and-Formats
XML info about halfway down the page.

    Copy XML info
Paste XML into to message window
    Highlight XML info
Select 'Code from drop down menu under the 'Backwards P' in the message options

There are some strange things happening with PMS and AFTVs (constantly), but perhaps we can invent a work-around if none already exists or identify yet another bug for the big AFTV bug list in the sky.

A full set of log files will also be useful at this point:
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files
Drag zip file to message window and drop it.

@ddivita Not exactly sure why you are having this problem, however I do know that the Amazon Fire TV will not pass DTS audio (DTS core or DTS-HD) thru. I have tried this on my parents AFTV and the server will transcode DTS audio to AC-3/E-AC3 audio. Video should play directly (unless chosen otherwise).

The audio plays fine, I just do not see a picture. On media where I have DD and DTS, if I select DD it plays fine.

Playing media on my PC through PLEX works fine. It seems to be isolated to my Fire TV.

If that AFTV is a Gen 1 device that 4.1 level is a certain Video Transcode - unless you bump the max h264 level to 4.1 in the app settings. If it's a Gen 2 device I think you're OK, but what does Information Overlay say?

Yea, that audio is going to be a problem, but you can convert that track to AC3 5.1 in minutes with Xmedia Recode while copying the original track to slot 2 for safe keeping - in case Plex ever makes it come back to life at some point. You'll have nice multi-channel audio in the meantime and you can do a whole bunch of files all at once with XR's Queue function:
    http://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/download.html
    Video - Copy
    Audio - Convert to AC3 5.1
Audio - Copy to slot #2

Hey, it's not a perfect world - but a work-around is better than nothing.

    @JuiceWSA
Well, the device updated about a month or so ago. Since then any file that has DTS will only play the audio (it is transcoded, but that is to be expected) and not the video. My last post has a picture of what the overlay displayed.

    Right... missed that... sorry.

Well, short term convert a new audio track or wait for the pp release to go public. I doubt Plex will transcode a multi-channel track for you. If it does, good, if it doesn't you can covert one if it's important.

It would be nice if it just passed through. My receiver decodes DTS.
