Unable to install the latest version of the plex media server

motasimmotasim Posts: 15Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

I have the plex media server installed on a mac mini that is running version 1.1.0.2611. I get a notification that a new version (1.7.6.4058) is available and when I try to upgrade, the new version gets downloaded but the installation never completes.

My mac mini configuration is as follows:

  • OSX Sierra (10.10.5)
  • Late 2014 model
  • 8GB RAM
  • 2.6 ghz core i5

Any help in solving this issue will be appreciated.

You need to turn off the guarded gate keeper. When you open the installer go to

System Preferences / Security & Privacy preferences / General. You will find next to "Allow app downloaded" Click Allow anyway and your good to go. It's there to protect you but catches many not being able to install.

The latest PMS installer is available:

Thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately the problem persists even after I did what you suggested.

I do not think downloading the installer is the problem as the download works fine, there is some issue in installing the updated version as that is where the process is getting stuck and the install never completes.

Well then your only option is to follow a uninstalling instructions and use a installer from:

the internal installer is just updating the parts of the "Plex Media Server.app" which need updating in your applications folder.

There can be issues updating individual parts when trying to use the internal updater from an very old version such as you are doing from 1.1.0 because so much has changed

if you download it from https://plex/tv/downloads unzip it then replace the one i your applications folder it replaces the whole thing and will accomplish the update.

    quit the server.

Place the 1.1.0 version someplace else if you want to keep it for back up and put the newly downloaded current version in applications folder.
