Roku vs Fire TV. Loading. Navigating.

hatfieldjfhatfieldjf Posts: 52Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

A question for users of Fire and Roku -

I mostly use Fire TV, but recently acquired a Roku Ultra. I have found the plex app on the roku to be very slow in navigating. Long waits with “loading”. I’m wondering if the performance issue is caused by the hardware differences or the apps. I’ve seen a few comments which seem to suggest recent performance issues in the plex roku. Would like to hear from folks having more extensive experience with both platforms.

Fire TVs Plex App is - for lack of a more accurate description - A **** Storm.
The Newest Version of the Roku Plex App is hot on Fire TVs Heels, but for the time being is usable... at least... I can't say the same for Fire TV.

The Roku Ultra - in case you don't believe the hundreds of posts here, or on Roku's Forums giving testament to it's **** Storminess:
    https://forums.roku.com/index.php
is - for lack of a better description - a troubled device with a long and storied past.

You're better off with the Roku Plex App - if you can get some support staff interested in providing some support for your Ultra and the issues you have. Those possibilities have recently taken a turn for the worse - to be more in line with the support you receive for other devices and apps (guessing here, but seems about right - looks, walks, talks like a duck - must be a duck).

I have both Fire and Roku 3. I prefer the Roku Plex interface. Bringing up the Plex app and navigating is easier and I find it responsive, the Fire is a bit faster. However, due to the lack of some codecs, the plex server may need to convert on the fly to make the stream compatible and that will cause the "loading" message, but doesn't take very long from my i7 7th gen processor. Now if your server is not powerful enough, it may take longer for it to convert and buffer the video before sending it to the Roku.

I hope that Plex doesn't redesign the app to look like the FireTv plex app, I like it as is. Only thing missing is the ability to select what to record and the guide. If they make it look like the FireTv interface, I'll start using Emby app instead (have both on same server).

I wasn’t very clear, but my “loading” issues on the roku are just in navigation. For instance when i click the movie library, it takes 20 seconds to show the list of movies. Then, clicking a movie, it takes a few seconds to show the title screen. I guess I have a big library and I like to browse a lot, so it is more painful on the roku, due to delays. I have 5-6 Fire TV’s in the house and generally have no complaints. An occasional crash but very tolerable. I have a roku express connected wirelessly, and don’t use often, but I don’t recall having these kind of delays. I’ll have to check it out. My users are all in the local network so I expect navigation should be swift. With the fire it mostly is.

Try an old fashioned 'Optimize the Database'.
    Might help - can't hurt.

Ok, I just tried mind going into different libraries. I'm connected via wire network and it loads my movie and tv shows library without delay. Bringing up a video does have a small loading time (3-4 secs).

The Amazon Fire TV 4K was my preferred Plex client before they screwed up the UI. Then I used the Roku Ultra all the time which I found noticeably quicker & snappier between screens than the Roku 3. My current favourite Plex client is an Odroid C2 (like a Raspberry Pi but 4x faster) running OpenPHT.
