Don't like to crosspost, but only now I saw this is the right place for a post I made a few days ago.

    pasting it here

The MacOS RasPlex installer works good, but have some caveats:

    - it saves the download (and temp files) on the root of the harddrive, a very strange place for that. I guess it changes to root when you type the password and looses the last current directory where it was as a user (or where the App itself is running from). It should download the files in the app current dir and save temp files to /tmp. Also, it should chown the downloaded files as the normal user because when it's done and you try to erase the file, you don't have permission and it has to authenticate again.

    - the inicial disk selection dialog is very dangerous!!! it defaults to the last disk (which seems reasonably good for avoiding the disk0) but after many times using it, I just managed to plug the sd card just before time machine started doing it's backups, and when the installer GUI entended it defaulted to disk4 which was timemachine. I almost clicked write. there should be _no_ disk selected, also the name / type / description / whatever of the the disk should be at the side of the name, also the size would help.

That's my sugestions for improvement. Otherwise, that is a VERY COOL project, I love it!

I tried the windows one, and it seems to do it right (tm). The temp xml file and the download is place in the current dir, and also the "select drive" dialog filters non-removable midia out.

It may also be nice to have the device description next to the identifier (i.e., /dev/disk2 - SANDISKblahblah).

Also, an observation, I had to completely disable Little Snitch on the Mac in order for the installer to work.  Allowing traffic through wasn't sufficient, and would download the image.  Strange.

I agree with these recommendations. I always do a 'diskutil list' before choosing the install location. Still makes me nervous.

Plus an option to do a USB install.

After running the mac installer, I notice that only one partition with roughly 264MB is being created, leaving 84MB free. Is that intentional? Wouldn't it be helpful to have more space to cache the library. Somewhere I read the recommendation to get an at least 4GB SD card. Am I missing something?

I had to download this: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/

Sometimes the RPi cards are only reading as 56mb or 256mb after RasPlex has had it's way with it. Not sure the reason for it but reformatting with this program should solve your problem. Takes about 15 minutes and will scrub it but it's pretty easy to put RasPlex back on as you've probably learned.

I downloaded the formatter and ran it. It deletes all data (both formatting options). When I manually copy the files back, I get the mounting error. Any ideas?

After going back to the original installation process, I noticed that additional partitions are created that can serve as local storage:

Filesystem                Size      Used Available Use% Mounted on
    none                    149.3M    132.0K    149.1M   0% /dev
    /dev/mmcblk0p1          249.7M    169.5M     80.3M  68% /flash
    /dev/mmcblk0p2            1.2G     39.3M      1.1G   3% /storage
    /dev/loop0              159.6M    159.6M         0 100% /
    none                    150.7M         0    150.7M   0% /dev/shm

So maybe the 80M available space is enough. After just a little while of navigating through shows and movies, my screen freezes completely. top reveals that there is quite a bit of stuff going on. What I can't exactly say:

    Mem: 201736K used, 106980K free, 0K shrd, 44580K buff, 128040K cached
    CPU: 52.9% usr 17.4% sys  0.0% nic 29.5% idle  0.0% io  0.0% irq  0.0% sirq
    Load average: 0.82 1.08 1.25 2/74 8554

It creates two partitions. The first is a small one, where only the bootloader goes. It has ~256MB total and 84MB free, is of the type FAT and can be seen by the mac (it appears as a mounted drive on the desktop after flashing). The second partition is a much bigger one, where all the system really resides (all the linux and plex stuff, plus space for caching). This other partition is of type linux and the mac cannot see/mount it so you don't see an icon appearing on the desktop, but you can see it on Disk Utility.

The install program dumps an image on the whole SD card, and on this image is everything, the patition table and the two partitions following it, that's why it "erases" everything on the card. The next install will again overwrite the whole thing so no need to "format" it between installs. But if you ever want to use the SD card for other uses again, you should enter Disk Utility and repartition to 1 partition type FAT, then the whole SD will be useable on a camera/whatever again.

    speaking about installers,

I just notice the windows installer when it's

done with his "magic" the bottom button keep

saying "CANCEL" it's not better if the button change

to something like "DONE" or "CLOSE"

I don't know, maybe it's just me being picky,

  • tokentoken Posts: 59Members, Plex Pass Plex Pass

Yep, the mac one also says cancel. It does nothing, you can just close the program, but I agree it could go grey of change to "close".

The installer is great but definitely needs more information about available disks to prevent major disasters.

As suggested showing the full device path would be good but probably the best safety check would be to display the size of the disk.  If someone is wanting to instal on an 8Gb SDHC they're not likely to pick a 750Gb disk...

The installers is not working under OSX Mavericks, does anyone know why besides the fact that it is brand new and still beta?

Another feature request (for at least the mac version): allow writing to "/dev/rdisk1", since this is much faster then the plain disk1.

I have to sheepishly admit that the installer wiped my RAID disk set of iTunes library and various video projects, so am pretty frustrated with myself. Even tho I checked with diskutil to ensure it was  going to write to my USB stick. 100% user error, but something as simple as destination size, may have saved my "valuable data"

p.s This was on the Mac installer

p.p.s Have I got any hope of recovering anything ? now that the disk(s) have been re-partitioned

the current vs for OSx does not work.  It will download the .img files but as soon as you tell it to format the SD card it just crashes with zero errors reported.  Had to install via cli.  not a major issue, but something the devs here should be aware of.
