Can't access PMS on Roku

I recently had to replace my desktop computer (which had been running Win 7) with a new one (running Win 8).  Prior to this switch, I was successfully running the Plex client on both my Samsung bluray and my Roku 2.  Following the switch of Windows boxes, I've managed to get the Plex client running on my Samsung bluray,  However, it seems the Roku cannot connect to PMS.  It will initially display my libraries, but when I attempt to open a library, I get an error:

"Content Unavailable: An error occurred while trying to load this content; make sure the server is running."

The libraries will then disappear from the client, but will reappear if I exit to the Roku's home screen and go back into the client.

I followed the troubleshooting at http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/37215-frequently-asked-questions/#entry236661, to no avail.  As requested in that post, here is the relevant info:

1) Yes, I have internet access on the Roku.

2) Windows Firewall has been disabled.  For the sake of completeness, I also disabled Peerblock.

3) I successfully pinged my Roku box.

4) I deleted all servers from the Roku client, and manually added.  Issue persists.

    Answer ✓

Your PMS is returning a 403, which means that it thinks the Roku isn't authorized to access that section.

There's a bug that has been reported by a couple of users when your Roku is connected to your myPlex account but your PMS isn't. For some reason I can't reproduce the problem yet, but I strongly suspect this is the problem. Until we get to the bottom of the issue and fix it, the best solution is to sign in to myPlex on your server as well.

I will learn about Roku's soon - but quick question: what is this port 32414 showing at the beginning of the log file?

    Getting a Roku next week.

Curious as to why it is trying to use port 32414

It looks like everything was working in that log. A log from when the sections were unavailable would be more interesting.

Port 32414 is used for discovering servers.

How many Plex Media Servers are there?

What is the local subnet you are on ? (The local network IP address range where the Plex Media Server is connected to?)

What is the IP Address of the Roku ?

Are you trying to connect remotely through myPlex ?

Those logs are a bit strange, to tell you the truth. The GDM discovery found your PMS at .128, but when it tried to make an HTTP request to that server it timed out after 30 seconds. Normally that timeout would mean that the server wasn't running or was totally inaccessible, but discovery succeeding means that the server should have been there and reachable. I don't have any great ideas. The Plex Media Server.log may show something.

There is only one log in Plex Media Server.log

That is the name of the file

If you have only one network, can you explain to me where all these IP Addresses came from (they are mentioned in the roku log):

    192.168.0.113
    192.168.131.1
    192.168.78.1
    98.154.216.125

How was the IP Address setup for the Plex Media Server? Static with IP Address and Network Mask  or DHCP [screenshot please of ip configuration]?

Can you ping the Roku from the Plex Media Server?
    if windows: start, run, cmd
    ping 192.168.1.103
what do you get ? ok or timeout?

In the same boat, I have posted on a couple similar threads.  All was working until I updated to 9.8.6 then it all stopped.

I am seeing the same behavior in the logs, the application is reporting a 401 when trying to contact the server.

Log files from roku and PMS

All IP Addresses for PMS and Roku

PMS log file should cover whole period from start to the time of the connection error

    The IPs above are correct:

Plex Media Server (PMS) is at 192.168.1.3

    Roku is at 192.168.1.4

My best guess from the above information is that Plex Media server is now checking something relative to my Plex Pass account, and I haven't opened up my external facing firewall (Vios Router) to the ports Plex wants to share information.

The myPlex section says that it cant sync my PMS with he PlexPass server (it didn't before the update either, but it wasn't an issue then).

    ROkU Log:

I think the myPlex connection attempt is coming later. It is failing to find the PMS server earlier on.

What is the server platform ?

I suggested the server log file as well

Plex Media Server.log covering from start till time of failure to connect. If has been up for a while, restart the Plex Media Server to start fresh logs and then wait 10 minutes for it to establish itself then try to use the Roku and do search for PMS from the Settings/Preferences and upload log files again from Roku and the Plex Media Server.log and plug-ins logs as well. I think Roku activity also goes to this log file Plex DLNA Server Neptune.log

Could you try to ping the roku, So on the PMS computer, (the example I am giving here is for windows):

    Start / Run / cmd

    ping 192.168.1.4

Also confirm PMS reachable by going to another computer or say iPad with wifi or phone with wifi and in browser goto

    http://192.168.1.3:32400/web

Presume you already checked that you have not accidentally set Require Local Authentication in Advanced Settings for myPlex in Plex Media Server

Plex PMS is on a Linux (ubuntu 13.04) platform

    Confirmed all of the above:

    Roku is pingable on network

Yes PMS is reachable on the network from other PCs

No network authentication is not and has not been enabled (I got caught by that when I first used Plex).

Here is a dropbox link to the logs I downloaded:

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ax1dho98em82on5/OOubWVe63l

Although I tried to make them as short as possible:

Restarted plex PMS to start a fresh log

went back to the Roku and attempted to connect (including re discovery attempt)

    then downloaded the logs

It really looks like the Roku PLEX channel is being blocked from connecting to the PMS. It doesn't look like it is being discovered in the DLNA Server log and the DLNA Neptune log is empty.

I presume you would have had logging enabled already since you have a problem

Thanks for the review of all the materials, and help in resolving this problem.

Last night I braved the basement to reset my FIOS router (oh I hate spiders!) with the plan to resolve the myPlex connection to Plex Media Server. I opened up the port forwarding of the outward facing firewall and enabled port 32400 then connected PMS to myPlex. Suddenly the problem is fixed.

Prior to my update, I didn't need to have the Plex Media Server connecting to myPlex, nor did I have port 32400 open on my router. There is clearly some sort of dependency to have the connection to myPlex working in this configuration:

    Ubuntu 13.04 (Running Apache)

    Plex Media Server 0.9.8.6

    Roku 2

I can reset the systems and create a new set of logs and post them to dropbox if that will help you debug the issue.

So you must have had the Roku Plex setting configured to login to myPlex. You do not need to do that if it is just local access and do not need local myPlex authentication for security. Schuyler's post earlier on this thread relates to this.

So basically if the Roku Plex channel is configured to login to myPlex then you do need to the server connection to myPlex and for the external myPlex connection to be working. You could just simply remove the myPlex login from the Roku Plex channel

That's the thing, I didn't have it configured to do so. Until last night, the Plex Media Server had never connected to the myPlex server and it had worked for at least a year. Plex Media Server had never connected to the myPlex account, the port on the external firewall was closed.

I think my initial install was 7 or 8 so, Looks like I started using Plex Spring 2012 (though I could swear it was longer).

My last update version was 0.9.7.something.

Plex stopped working after the update to 0.9.8.6.

When Plex stopped working on my Roku I checked all the settings and jiggled the knobs a little to see if something shook loose. None of the following actions worked.

    1. Removed all discovered Plex Servers and rediscovered

    2. Connected my Roku to myPlex account (and repeated 1)

    3. Disconnected my Roku from myPlex account (repeat 1)

    4. Restarted Plex Media Server (repeated 2 and 3 and 1 ... )

    5. Signed out of myPlex account from PMS Setting Page (repeated 4 ... )

    6. Signed back on to myPlex account (and repeated 4)

    7. Reattempted to connect PMS to myPlex - failed (repeat 4)

    8. Unchecked manually specifying port 32400 (repeat 7)

    9. Rechecked manually specifying port 32400 (repeat 7)

    10. Did factory reset on the Roku and re-installed Plex (repeat 4)

    11. Removed Plex Media Server from my Linux box and reinstalled (repeat 4)

Then I hit the support boards... which is where you came in (thanks again).

The only thing that made any difference was log into my outward facing firewall, open port 32400 and resolve the Plex Media Server being able to connect to myPlex.

I was reluctant to mess with the firewall because I was lazy (and I really dislike spiders). I had not had to mess with my firewall for probably 5 years and had lost the password to the Verizon router. My wireless settings and such were all right where I wanted them, and I wasn't sure I could get them right without pulling another all-nighter to get the entire families wireless do-hickeys back online (turned out it wasn't that bad, but I digress).

Once I set it up to connect it worked. I really like the software. It does have some hiccups (like not updating properly through synaptic) but in general is really good.
