A pre-release of a new plugin for sf.tv
Hi,

I wrote a small plug-in for the Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss Television, http://sf.tv ).

This is the first release, so certainly there will be bugs. Any comments would be appreciated.

Description and download instructions in the wiki at: http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Schweizer_Fernsehen

Thanks a lot for the plugin - as a Swiss living in the USA I really appreciate your effort and the comfort of watching sf.tv directly from within PLEX. The plugin looks pretty stable already in the first release. One thing I realized was that some shows do not seem to be available (e.g. "Der rosarote Panther"). Instead of showing no reaction after selection, it would have been nice to show a quick message like "Keine Sendungen vorhanden". The other thing I noticed was that not all the shows have a description available, e.g. Tagesschau and Kassensturz have it, Reporter and DOK do not have it. Otherwise - great job! Looking forward to the next version. Merci und wiiter so, Daniel

    Hi,

I just downloaded and installed the sf plugin. It appeared in my video sources list, and I was able to browse its contents, but I receive an error message whenever I select a recording. I am not able to view any contents. Ideas?

This is fantastic! Thanks Christian for taking this up. I also live abroad and this is very useful.

A small problem I have is that for most streams the video and audio seem to be stuttering slightly from about 20 seconds into playing. Maybe a problem with the streaming cache settings. I have not had similar issues with any other apps in this area.

    Thanks for looking into this.

Right now the plugin selects the WMA video stream that is around 1.4Mbit/s, if available.

You could try to increase the cache size in Plex: Settings > System > Cache. (The plug-in only retrieves the stream-URL, playing itself is done by Plex.)

The SF site also provides lower bandwidth streams. I'm thinking about adding a user preference setting to make the quality (and bandwidth) selectable.

    Hope this helps.

I have changed the cache setting. While it improves stability, programmes now take unbearably long to load.

The stuttering is most likely caused by insufficient bandwidth. I am based in Asia and while the connection to Swiss servers is generally good, I don't think it is always sufficient to allow for streaming at 1.4Mbit/s.

This does not seem to be an issue when I watch something directly on the SF Videoportal. But then again, I have also noticed that the quality is somewhat worse than watching it over Plex. My assumption would be that the website automatically defaults to the most appropriate bandwidth, while the plug-in always takes the best stream. So having the option to select a lower quality streams in the user preferences if the caching takes too long would be a great addition indeed.

From some previous conversations I seem to remember that the BBC iPlayer also offers different quality streams and the relevant Plex App picks up the most appropriate bandwidth in the same way the website does. Just a thought, but maybe there is even an automated way to doing this by replicating how the SF Videoportal checks for bandwidth.

    Thanks in advance.

Separately, I also sent you some artwork for the plug-in.

    Hi,

I have uploaded a new version (v0.4) of the sf.tv plug-in. Any comments are appreciated. If it works well, I'm going to submit it to the App Store soon.

    The changes:

    Version 0.4
*New user preference for quality selection
    *Removed "Channels"
    *Rework the "Search"
    *New artwork courtesy of schnuro

    Get it from http://github.com/chhitz/sfPlexPlugin/zipball/v0.4

    /Christian

If you had installed a previous version of the plug-in, you need to delete the "~/Library/Application Support/Plex/userdata/Thumbnails/PlexMediaServer/Fanart" folder in order to see the new artwork.

    Hello,

I'm a new user to Plex/xbmc. Downloaded Plex today to our Mac. Your SF.tv plugin is great, but every show I try to watch crashes after about 2-3 minutes. No error message. Just bumps back to show selection menu.

Have extensively tested the shows at different quality settings and let several programmes run till the end. I did not experience the crashes mbryner describes. Interestingly even the 1,500Mbit/Sec stream works fine for me now. The search function also works fine. So I would definitely give this one a thumbs-up and from my point of view this could be submitted! Great plug-in.

Another plug-in that would be nice to have would be one for TeleZueri Web-TV. Quite a basic website, the video quality is nowhere near the one of SF and only relevant regionally. Nevertheless, it would be very handy to have this in Plex. Unfortunately, I don't have any programming experience myself. So if anyone with a bit more skills than I am can get this started, I am happy to help where I can (artwork, testing, etc.).

    Thanks.

    Hey chhitz

    Awesome plugin!!! Really good work!!!

Some months ago, i also programmed a plugin for the sf.tv - videosite, but i did it for the XBMC mediacenter not PLEX...
i also released a osx-widget to directly access the tv-shows..
but some weeks later, sf.tv changed their videosite, and my plugin and widget didn't work anymore..

Then i tried to parse the new videosite, but i couldn't find a way to get the direct link to the tv-shows..
how did you do that? in the sourcecode of the videowebsite, I can only find javascript-links which manages the movie loading..

My idea of the plugin was to give access to all tv-shows, like you're plugin does.. but in addition giving the possibility to watch the "Dossiers" on the SF.TV-Wissen site (http://www.sf.tv/sfwissen/index.php?WT.zugang=front_pla) and the watch the news-video on the SF.TV-Sport site (http://sport.sf.tv/)
Propably you can implement that in your current plugin, or probably I can do it, if you want....

By the way here are the links to my released plugin and osx-widget.. but as i told, these aren't working anymore

Thank you very much for the great SF plugin. This is exactly what I was waiting for. It used to work perfect but since a few days I only get a black screen when trying to watch a video. Does anybody else experience this problem?

    Thanks for your help.

Me too. It acts like it is trying to cache, but nothing happens. Just black screen. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. It seems the SF people changed something. I'll look into it over the weekend.

The sf.tv site was changed recently, which broke the display part of the plug-in. I have not yet figured out how to get the high-quality, direct streaming working again. In the mean time the following version allows the plug-in to show video, although at a lesser quality:

    http://github.com/chhitz/sfPlexPlugin/zipball/v1.1

The AppStore should be updated with this version in a few days.
