UPDATE:

Plex Media Server has integrated an automated crash reporting function, rendering this thread obsolete.  Please see the following link for more information:

https://plexapp.zend...icles/201455336

...

Original (obsolete) post follows:

...

If you happen to run into a situation where Plex Media Server crashes on Windows, we want to hear about it. When you file a bug report about a crash, please obtain a crash dump file and post it along with your report. Crash dump files are essential to enabling us to debug crashes and fix the bugs that cause them.

This post explains how to configure Windows to automatically generate crash dumps when a process crashes.

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and beyond:

The following steps enable automatic crash dumps on Windows Vista SP1 and Windows 7:

1) Open RegEdit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting
3) Under Windows Error Reporting, create a new registry key named LocalDumps.

If Plex Media Server crashes after this, you will find a new dump file under %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps. The dump file will be named something along the lines of Plex Media Server.exe.5884.dmp.

More detailed information on these steps can be found at http://msdn.microsof...181(VS.85).aspx and http://msdn.microsof...638(VS.85).aspx.

Windows XP

The following steps enable automatic crash dumps on Windows XP:

1) Open a command prompt, running as administrator
2) Run drwtsn32 -i. This will install Doctor Watson as the default debugger when something crashes
3) Click Ok
4) From the command prompt, run drwtsn32
5) Set the Crash Dump path to your favorite directory, or leave the default.
6) Set the Crash Dump Type to mini. Note that under some circumstances, we may ask you for a full crash dump.
7) Make sure the Dump All Thread Contexts and Create Crash Dump File options are selected.
8) Click Ok
9) If a user.dmp file already exists in the Crash Dump path, delete it.

If Plex Media Server crashes after this, you will find a new dump file in the Crash Dump path selected above. The default path is "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\user.dmp". Copy this file to a different location and then upload it with your bug report.

Tim:

Thanks for the crash dump. This is a tricky one. Any chance you can enable full dumps, as per these instructions? (The setting you want is DumpType.)

Plex will not launch at all. The "configure media server" seems to be working, but the application does not start. I am not sure if it is even "crashing". Followed directions to create crash dumps as follows.

1) Open RegEdit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting
3) Under Windows Error Reporting, create a new registry key named LocalDumps.

However, exactly where do I go to find any dump files? %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps is confusing to me. I apologize, not that computer savy. Could not find a %localappdata% directory.

Your appdata directory is hidden by default, much to the chagrin of every Windows application developer in the history of man.

To find it, you go here: C:\Users\[whatever-your-login-is]\. Now click "Organize" in the top-left corner, and in the list select "Folder and Search Options". Now click the "View" tab. Half-way down the list there's a Hidden files and folders toggle, select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives". Click OK to close this window.

Your "appdata" directory should now be visible. In here, there are three subfolders, apparently you want "local", then wherever the fellow above is instructing you to look.

While you've got folders unhidden, you might want to right click the "appdata" folder, choose "properties", and deselect "hidden". It will ask if you want to just unhide the folder itself or all the files within it. Just unhide the folder itself... this will make for easier troubleshooting and locating program files later.

Now you can go back into Folder and Search Options and reverse what I told you before to re-hide stuff that you really shouldn't be messing with for safety reasons.

~~~~~~~~~
Also, for your reference, when someone tells you a folder that begins and ends with a % sign, you can put it in the little search box in your start menu and it will show you where they are.
My Plex MS crashes everytime. If I just load PMS, the python.exe process stays open and the PMS opens for 15 seconds and then just closes itself. Python remains. The taskbar icon for PMS stays there until I hover over it, and then it disappears. And in this instance, no Local CrashDumps are created.
If I open PMS and then QUICKLY go to the taskbar (in order to get there before the process closes), I am able to right-click on the PMS icon. And I can go to configure, update, about (and they work). But I will get an error message while the menu is opened stating:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Runtime Error!
Program: C:... (i am not omitting this; nothing is listed but the ellipsis)
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried renaming all the copies of msvcr80.dll, msvcr90.dll and msvcr100.dll files that were not in a system folder, as suggested in the forums. Nothing works. It simply won't load and play.
Thanks for your help. Attached is the dump from the isntance where I right click and get the error.
floundies:
Thanks for the bug report. The crash dump is rather difficult to debug, but my best guess is that a module called BtMmHook.dll is corrupting the heap, leading to a crash.
A quick web search indicates that this is something installed by a Broadcom Bluetooth software package. I have no idea why it's running inside Plex Media Server, but its name indicates it's some kind of Windows hook. My advice would be to uninstall this package and retry running PMS.
Sorry, just found the solution to my issue below in another thread, the movie "The fly" is what's causing my issues.. but i would really like to know why my dumpfiles are so huge? I enabled "Full Dump" as described above.. are 87Mb normal? Anyways thanks for making this great piece of software! :)
Hi, I just installed PMS on my windows box running windows 7 ultimate 64bit. It worked for a while, but when i started messing about with the metadata of files already scanned while the scanner was working I got an windows error saying the pms had stopped working, checking task manager, the plex media scanner was still working though. When i restarted PMS, it would not load the config-page. So i killed the media scanner process, and now it show the configurationpage, but as soon as i start scrolling in the list of movies I managed to get loaded, the PMS crashes..
Hmm, my latest crash dump is 87MB? how's that even possible?
Well, anyway, oncluded are one of the smaller craschdumps created...
Attached File  Plex Media Server.exe.4380.dmp.zip   954.93KB   16 downloads (not zipped, just renamed so I could upload it)
Full dumps are indeed large. That's why they're "full". :)
And just to confirm, the issue with "The Fly" in your crash dump should be addressed in the next release.
I uninstalled every instance of BtMmHook.dll and it still crashes (silently). Any other suggestions?
When I load it now, it will crash silently, but there will be 4 instances of python running still (no PMS).... And the error log looks like this:
I uninstalled every instance of BtMmHook.dll and it still crashes (silently). Any other suggestions?
When I load it now, it will crash silently, but there will be 4 instances of python running still (no PMS).... And the error log looks like this:
Reboot to clear port usage and ensure uninstallation of BtMmHook.dll.
Then re-run and post a new crash dump if it's still crashing.
[Edit: For clarification, he is running a pre-release that I gave him of 0.9.5.2 --elan]
Hello,
The Plex Media Center is crashing straight after launching it (startup items).
System: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64Bits
Please find attached the .dmp file for this event.
Ps. I think my problem lies in the Microsoft .NET framework 4 as the standard win update is having trouble installing it...
Thanks!
Mav.
mav3r1ck:
Any chance you can reproduce the crash with the latest released bits? I don't have symbols for the PMC build in question.
Thanks, and sorry for the hassle.
I have Plex Media Client crashing every time I try and play a movie / tv show. can you let me know how I run a crash report to post up for debugging assistance? Plex Media Server doesn't crash so I'm assuming i don't just follow the instructions above
Plex Media Center crashes on startup. I get the plexstartup screen and then a window indicating "Plex Media Center has stoppedworking." It worked fine for a month. I removed/reinstalled the clientwithout success. I also uninstalled several recently installed programs that Ithought might be creating a conflict with it...no luck. The PMS is workingfine. The Plex client on my other computer on the same local network worksfine.
The log stops at the same spot every time
My issue is with client (installed on same machine as server). PMS is great (still chucklin'), but have not been able to get past client splash screen. Dump attached.
Cheers,
