I have done what you suggested but after a reboot i am still coming back to a blank library in plex results below for my ownership etc

drwxr-xr-x 3 plex nogroup 4096 2011-11-23 16:23 plexmediaserver

Well, you're not giving me much detail to go on, but from what you're saying it sounds like PMS is now able to start successfully (whereas it was crashing before) but once started, you have a blank library.

So, your'e ready to start using PMS and you need to tell it where your media folders are and let it do its thing. Please refer to the documentation.

Here's a link to the wiki:http://wiki.plexapp....x.php/Main_Page

And here's a direct wiki link to accessing and using the web-based media manager (all that is available on Linux and Windows versions of PMS) - it includes how to add new media "sections" to your library: http://wiki.plexapp....MS_MediaManager

So you're saying that you were able to add TV and Movies sections, they populated with your media and things looked good, but then upon reboot, you have a blank library again? Describe blank - are the TV and Movie sections themselves gone or just the movies/shows inside the sections? Does the same thing happen if you just restart the PMS service vs. reboot?

How was PMS started when you did add the sections - did it start as a service, or were you still loading it manually with the start_pms command you were using during troubleshooting the permissions issue? Perhaps you were starting it as a different user or something?

Show us what the permissions look like on the folders/files in the library folder: do this and show us the output:
ls -l /var/lib/plexmediaserver

What does the Plex Media Server.log look like after the reboot?

Hello, I was hoping someone can help me with my issue and that it's possibly an easy fix. I'm super new to linux and learning little by little. I'm running a PMS on lubuntu. I got everything running fine. Google tv recognizes it as well as my android phone on local. However when trying to connect to it from outside via plex app for android phone or my laptop, I can't connect to it. Should I be doing something with my router to get it going? I also had similar issues before with other softwares, so I think i'm just being an extreme noob, but would really like to figure this out. I'm running a D-link extreme N gigabit router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It is probably just a matter of forwarding the correct port from your router. If you haven't made any configurations changes to Plex server, it should still be using the default port 32400. Log into your router and provide it with the ip address of the Plex server as well as the proper port and this should fix your issue.

I've got an Asrock ION 330HT. It's running Ubuntu 12.04 with XBMC, and I havent come accross a file it could not handle.

Last week I've installed PMS on this box. But when I try to play a video with my Apple TV it's buffering every few seconds (network cable connected). PMS is maxing out the CPU of my Asrock, so I think it just cant keep up. Is there any way to relieve my CPU a bit?

Does anyone think it would be possible to let the GPU do the transcoding (through VDPAU)?

I'm having some similar issues myself. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, have tried it on two computers with similar issues. I was able to get it to work shortly, but then tried to add on more than the test file I had and it all went to hell. I'm not sure where to go from here. Here is what I've done so far

-1 Followed the steps in this guide
-2 Added permission to group plex to the folders and parent folder (except that in one of my computers there isn't a plex group... do I add one?)
-3 Tried moving files around, doing manual entry, to no avail.

Sooner or later I want to convert a old computer in to a little media server, but I'm a little weary after this experience. Any suggestions or help would be really appreciated

Matt

I'm installing plexmediaserver on TurnkeyLinux (32-bit Ubuntu Server 10.04.1), I get this:

Setting up plexmediaserver (0.9.5.2-7a18da4) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/plexmediaserver.postinst: 16: service: not found
/var/lib/dpkg/info/plexmediaserver.postinst: 16: service: not found

and the plex service does not get created or started. TurnkeyLinux is a dream for building small Ubuntu servers, but I suppose something vital has been stripped out which Plex needs. Any idea what might that might be?

This may not be the right place to post this, and if so, please let me know. Anyway, here's my problem:

I wanted to completely remove Plex Media Server (v9.3.x) from my Ubuntu machine, so i ran 'sudo apt-get remove plexmediaserver'. I then deleted the /etc/default/plexmediaserver and /etc/init/plexmediaserver files, as well as the /var/lib/plexmediaserver folder. At a later point in time (just now, actually), I decided to re-install Plex Media Server (sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver). However, it seems that none of the above files or folders were re-installed. Without any detailed information about the location of all files relevant to PMS (the wiki is quite lacking in that respect for everything not Mac related), I can only assume that I missed something.

Any help locating the necessary files to completely remove PMS so that I may properly re-install it would be appreciated.

[EDIT]

I seem to have fixed the problem. I found a .list and a .postrm file that I had missed. I removed those, and PMS seemed to install properly afterwards. It didn't start up automatically (I assume it would if I restarted), so I ran the start.sh file in the /usr/lib/plexmediaserver folder and it seems to run just fine.

Though I have found a peculiar bug in PMS. Unless there is a media file in the root directory of your TV shows/Movies/etc. folder (excluding music for some reason), the media scanner won't find any media. In the mean time I've simply placed a random media file in my TV Shows folder which fixed the issue. I never noticed it with my movies since I had some media in the base directory for my movies folder. This is a bug I encounter in both the Mac OS X version and the Ubuntu version of PMS.

Where were the .list and .postrm file that you missed located? I'm trying to re-install Plex and have wasted hours to no avail. Please help!

First off, thanks for the great guide.

My issue is that I can't seem to get the UnSupportedAppstore.bundle plugin to the right place. I was running it successfully on my windows machine and decided to move it over to my Ubuntu 11.10 Server that is already doing my other media functions.
I installed it just fine and everything is humming along great. Except that putting the bundle with the rest of them (/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins) doesn't seem to get it to load. I noted that the UnSupportwdAppstore Thread says that it should be loaded in the ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins directory. This folder was not created at install, so I created it and moved the bundle there, but again to no avail. Anything I'm missing here?

By the way, I've been using Mac, Windows, and Roku clients, none of which the plugin is showing up on.

Thanks for any help!

Could someone help with Plex Media server and Ubuntu 11.10? Is it even possible to make it work?
But lets start from beginning: I have Samsung TV (with Smart Hub) with HDD drive attached to it via USB. The main problem - there is no way to copy new files to HDD otherwise than everytime attach it to PC. Of course I could hack TV Set and put on SamyGO, but it's too risky and I decided to try Plex Laika together with Plex Media Server and keep HDD always attached to PC. Widget install on TV was easy, but media server install and configuration was NIGHTMARE!!! Yes, I executed install commands as written http://www.plexapp.c...ms-download.php, but there is no instructions what must be done next! My guess - there must be some configuration tool, but how to find if? Here http://wiki.plexapp....MS_Installation is NO WORD on Linux side! In forum I found than configuraion page can be accesed http://localhost:324...nage/index.html, OK, uhhh, at least some progress I thought... and next 3 hours I tried make it recognize my media... with no succeess! First of all, there are plenty of bugs in HTML configuration page, most critical - 1) these pop-up windows must be modal, but they are not; so I can press Preferences many times, this will opem many windows and only first can be closed; only full reload helps; 2) there are problems with window sizes in browsers, for example, Chrome. But the biggest problem I cant add paths to directories as this window is not showing subdirectories for selection! For exampe, I can select path /media/PENDRIVE or /home/<user directory>, but subdiretories are not loaded in selection window! And yes, no media files found even with these directories. I tried to add Plex to my group, played with directory and file names, changed permissions, but with no success! What must be done to make it work?

I identified the problem - subdirectories were not shown as attached storage was NTFS drive and automounted with permissions of current user (chmod and chown useless for groups on NTFS USB drive). I believe this can be resolved to disable automount and mount with correct permissions using fstab configuration.

I am VERY new to Ubuntu, just bought an HP X2 refurb and installed 11.04 on it. Installed Avahi and PMS on it also...got it running and tried to add media files to it from an external usb drive. I couldn't get the drive tree to expand and could only pick the root of the drive...I decided to reboot the pc and now I can't connect to the PMS at all....it seems like it's running...... "plexmediaserver start/running, process 3561" but I can't connect to it locally through firefox or from any other pc on my network....why is it not working after a reboot? I made NO changes before or after the reboot!!! someone please help me!!!!

-thx

NM: did the "sudo su -c /usr/sbin/start_pms plex" command and it showed me the link to my usb drive was bad....I unplugged the usb drive and plex is up and running now. BUT, all my files (1 tb) are on a goflex drive that is NTFS. I cannot seem to add any files to PMS from it.....what do I do?

First of all, please, check Plex logs (find them with 'find' or 'locate' command). For 100% there will be line which indicates permission problems. This is issue more related to Ubuntu and the way how USB drives are mounted. When drive is automounted, only current user has permissions to access files and directories. If you are granting rights to group for all HDD NTFS content (group which contain plex user), this does not work (with ls -l you will see that group permissions are not set). You can try to switch off automounter and mount HDD by yourself with correct rights, but its not very handy. The solution for my problem (Plex and Samsung TV) was to not use Plex, but install DLNA server, for example Serviio (Java application, so you need also istall Java virtual machine).

I'm glad this thread exists. I installed PMS into an OpenVZ container running Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 and nothing worked. PMS appeared to start fine, but I couldn't reach the web interface at all. Using the command "sudo su -c /usr/sbin/start_pms plex" allowed me to fix everything up and now PMS works great!! Skywise's tip was incredibly helpful.

I have just installed PMS following the instructions at the start of this thread. However the install never created a plex user just a group.

Do I need a PLEX user to be able to add folders as all I show when I run the management page will show me the root folder eg Stroage01 but no folders under it.

I have run the ls -lrt command and have this output

kimbie@kimbie-nas:/media/storage02$ ls -lrt
total 24
drwx------ 2 root root 16384 2012-03-05 18:01 lost+found
drwxrwxr-x 12 kimbie kimbie 4096 2012-03-24 13:30 Anime
drwxrwxr-x 56 kimbie kimbie 4096 2012-03-25 02:44 TV

Thanks

I've tried a couple of times to install with apt-get on Ubuntu but have always given up when I couldn't get the manage/index.html page to load. I've tried numerous Ubuntu server versions, both 32-bit and 64-bit as well as 10.04 and 11.10 and always ended up at the same place.

After completing the steps with apt-get at the beginning of the thread I wasn't even getting the log file to show up, even though the Plex Media Server was running when I looked at ps. Once I added the plex user to my user's group the log file was created the next time I started the app:

'sudo adduser plex myuser' where myuser is your username

At this point I tried to use the browser to access the manage/index.html page but got the 404 Not Found error. It looks like rsync is required, so I installed it with:

'sudo apt-get install rsync'

At this point going to manage/index.html worked. Hope this helps anyone getting that 404 Not Found error.

I recently updated the HowTo and tested PMS on 12.04 Beta 2. Works like a charm! ;)
