It's alive, folks.

Haven't tested diddly squat yet, but I told last night's work to compile and went to bed...and woke up to working playback.

Assorted screenshots of Plex built and running on linux. Current source tree is at https://github.com/gewalker/plex-linux . It should build on most recent distros if you have the requisite packages installed. Check README.plex-linux for suggested packages (So far, we have a good list for Ubuntu 11.04, If you build on another distro, please keep notes). This is still experimental, so while you may feel free to tell me what doesn't work, don't expect me to be all that excited, as there's plenty. Core functionality, however, is looking good. :)

I can't say how happy I am to see this! I'm so depressed over the complete disaster Lion has turned out to be, and I'm trying to get used to the Idea of a world with out Mac OS, and stuff like this sure helps towards convincing me I can be happy there :)
Hopefully it should build on Mint 11 too, so that will be first on my agenda for tomorrow morning (well, after coffee and smokes, that is).

I've been trying hard to stop using this word in a forum post, but surely this warrants a slight relapse: Awesome!

And its not only on Ubuntu.

We have it up on CentOS 6.1 too. With a little help from Scientific Linux :) (Sandy Bridge with internal GPU :) )

And the answer is yes: it does fullscreen too.

You need to pull in the submodules which include the ffmpeg fork. Check my post from earlier this morning for instructions.

I would love to see a light weight bootable version of this project. Currently I am using openelec (xbmc) which has been great but I would rather do everything through my plex server.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Clint

The Linux PMC is currently community driven, and slow at that.

For now there is only Gary's and my CentOS packages avail, and the src.

Deb packages: http://forums.plexap...inary-packages/
CentOS packages: http://forums.plexap...x-media-center/

But I'm sure this will eventually progress. Its just slow as other things have taken focus at the moment.

I find it strange that the best media app still don't have a standalone client except running it on the mac mini.
On apple tv & roku you need to select plex first to be in plex. That is where I like xbmc better. I could have a dedicated machine that just boots in xbmx and I could use it.

Best thing would be that Xbmc became the frontend for plex and plex kept working on the fantastic backend.

You forgot to mention, Windows, Samsung Smart Hub Blue-Ray players, Samsung smart tv's, LG Media link tv's, Androind phones and iPhone/iPad (IOS), also run plex clients. And the few who have had success with the Linux builds.

Then there is the fact that the plex client is based on XBMC code, and also available via github. So if you want to build your own Linux client, you can. Just get it from here: https://github.com/gewalker/plex-linux , you can fork it and make changes/fixes and send pull requests back and help out, with getting it to where you want it to go.

Please note the there is not a huge dev team running this project, and a few volunteers. so new branches and updates some times take a little while to get sorted out. I'm sure this will happen sooner than later.

Update: I forgot.. There is also a whole forum section for it here: http://forums.plexap...nter-for-linux/
