I seem to be having the same issue. I shut down zonealarm (firewall) and the problem goes away. i have all the programs associated with plex on the zonealarm trusted list but still get the problem when zonealarm is on maybe i'm missing something. Has anyone else had any luck

I have the same issue but with TCPblock on Snow Leopard.

When I disable TCblock the movie will stream, enable it and I get the same error again.

I just found that my firewall was blocking the Plex transcoder, added Plex Transcoder to my firewalls whitelist and I am no longer getting the "Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found" error, plays everything fine now.

I was having this problem and fixed this and other related problems with play back. I noticed that the files that had the playback error had a 00:00:00 duration. Also, other movies/shows didn't playback as expected when their duration didn't match reality. For example, a movie that is 2 hours long reported it had a duration of 00:12:00. In other words, PLEX was having a problem playing movies that had the internal duration off. Here is how I fixed the internal clock.

First of all, I am a windows 7 user, but I still wanted to report my fix. I downloaded ffmpeg from ffmpeg.org. There are linux, mac and windows downloads available. This software allows you to do all kinds of stuff in terms of transcoding files from one type to another. The command I used was:

ffmpeg -i "filename.ext" -c:v copy "newfilename.ext"

What this does, is it remuxes the file using the same video bit rate and fixes the timing. (The timing is what PLEX didn't like.)
--The first part [-i "filename"] is where you specify the input filename.
--The second part [-c:v copy] is where you specify that you are not changing the video bit rate. (You can add [-c:a copy] if you want to copy the audio as-is)
--The third part is where you specify the output file name.
For example, if I have "my movie.VOB" with a duration of 00:00:00 (or something incorrect), I will get a new file "my movie 2.VOB" with the correct time (like 01:42:30, or whatever the duration is). I then delete the bad file and rename the new. I do a refresh on the section in PLEX, maybe have to rematch and the movie now plays in PLEX (and on my Roku).

Each file takes about 3-5 minutes. **Important note, because I am not specifying [-c:a copy], my video files all have 2 channel audio (ffmpeg default??).** For me, this is fine because my computer and main tv run stereo only. I know this is not great for everyone, but there is plenty of documentation on ffmpeg.org. Maybe it will work for you. If you get it working, please post back your fix.

I'm guessing PLEX is confused by the internal timing of the files. It needs to be able to ignore the internal timing and just play the file.

I hope this was not too confusing.

Can this have anything to do with my media being on a USB drive formatted with NTFS? I am reformating as ext4 to give that a try. I have an internal drive formatted with NTFS, too since I used to run Win7 on here. The pure Ubuntu server I use has never given me these troubles. I have no firewall running.

I have everything on a couple of external USB 2TB drives formatted NTFS. My only problem has been the internal timing in my VOBs.

No matter what media I try to access via the web client, I get "Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found". Maybe my google foo is off, but I have been searching for the source of this problem for 7 hours now and cannot find an answer. Any ideas?

Hi Scotty

I just learned on the chat line that Plex doesn't support DVD-rips. I.e. VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.

The recommendation is to transcode by means of makemkv.

Hi

Plex doesn't support VOBs. You might convert to MKV by means of makemkv.

I had the same problem running on a linux (self-built) server. The issue was that librtmp.so.0 couldn't be found. I didn't have it on the system and the sever wasn't using the one that came bundled. I have added a symbolic link from my lib directory to the plexmediaserver/librtmp.so.0 and now I can play everything. It looks like a bug to me.

Hi could you be more specific here ?

i am having the same issue trying to play some video contents in m3u8 format on my plex server 0.9.7.7 web plex  and its giving me the same error.

i have compiled from source and installed rtmpdump2.3.2 and 2.4 on my ubuntu-server, rtmpdump also compiled the lib librtmp.so.0

i have stopped and restarted the plex server via terminal but its still not playing the contents via the plexweb..

if u can be more specific how u linked it, i would appreciate.

thxs

I had the same M3U8 404 not found error (DS111).  I suspected that it had to do with a missing codec or links to libraries.  I also noticed that I did not have ffmpeg installed (ipkg list_installed | grep ffmpeg).  I installed ffmpeg (ipkg install ffmpeg).  Seems like this fixed the problem. I no longer get the M3U8 error, at least on the few files that were previously I was previously unable to stream.  However, I'm getting "Error while opening file." with some videos.  I haven't yet checked librtmp.so.0 but will.

I am having this issue as well now on Ubuntu 13.04 Server. Pretty sure this started after the upgrade from Ubuntu 12.10.

 I haven't yet checked librtmp.so.0 but will.

Already installed here:

sudo apt-get install librtmp0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
librtmp0 is already the newest version.
librtmp0 set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

No suck luck after setting: Settings > Advanced > Transcoder > "Transcoder temporary directory"

So no more error about not being able to create the folder and I see in my plex folder it does indeed create a new random folder. But nothing is within that folder.

I too had the same error. I realise I am posting in the wrong forum, as I have plex running on Synology, but maybe it helps you as well.

Plexserver versions tested:

0.9.7.28.33

0.9.8.0.36

0.9.8.1.46

On Synology Intel.

Somehow the temporary transcode folder was not set during the installations. In my case the temporary folder that is made by the installer was:

/volume2/Plex/tmp_transcoding/

After I set the temp transcode folder using the webinterface, settings, advanced settings, transcoder, 'temp folder for transcoding' the dreaded "Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found" was gone.

Thanks a lot SUKI !!! This works have been looking for this solution for days, now works in windows and ATV3

Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found

Solution

Change webinterface "advanced settings" => transcoder => fill the emty field ex. "TempTranscoder"

Each client is capable of direct playing different formats. With plex/web it comes down to what browsers you are using and what os you are running it on.

that NAS does not support transcoding.  you'll need to use a client that supports whatever format the media is in.
