We turned to Plex after many a frustrated attempt to convince Windows Media Player to allow our Sony Blu-ray Disc players (we have three) to play video files stored on an external hard drive connected to a desktop PC. My question is simple: can Plex serve files to the bluray players? If so, how?

Thanks so much!

They are and they work but the DLNA profile for the BDP players is not 100% complete yet. This will hopefully be implemented soon.

Not had any luck with Sony Blu-rays using Plex. Several of us posted info about difficulties with them and really have not got any useful feedback. Check this post:

To date, I have given up for now on trying to use Plex with the Sony blu-ray (although as noted in the ref discusson, Plex works fine with Sony N200). Found it very easy to use Serviio with it from the git-go as well as some other servers.

I use Plex (server v0.9.6.9) successfully with Sony BDP-S390, PS3 and KDL-26EX553 devices. The Plex server runs on a WHS 2011 server. DVDs and Blu-rays are copied using DVDFab then transcoded to high quality .mp4 files before viewing by an AVA plugin (Handbrake GUI). The same plugin also creates lower resolution .m4v files for remote viewing on my Android mobile. Plex is a more complete solution but Serviio does have some nice features such as better status monitoring and having a WHS 2011 version!

I am playing movies just fine using my Sony Blu-Ray and Plex from my PC. I'm curious if any of you can see the Artwork when searching through the files? I can see the names, year, etc. But I see no artwork. Is that a setting?

I use Plex Server Mac to stream MP4 video to a Sony BDP S-580, and the player can immediately see Plex. However, video quality is extremely poor. Serviio sends very high-quality video, so I guess the problem is in some settings to be done at the server side. But I could not find any way to tell Plex to choose higher quality. Any hint would be appreciated, since Plex is really on another planet when ease of use is concerned.

John: No that's not a setting it has to do with the current DLNA profile for BDP players. This will improve over time!
