By the way, these films can be seen perfectly in any player (VLC, etc) and through the Web Plex Client, the problem occurs only through the application installed Plex on the TV.

Does anyone know can this be happening? Has this happened to more people?

Thanks!

Confirmed, I too have been noticing issues with MKV files and a black screen.

Using MKVTools:

mkvmerge -o output.mkv –compression 1:none input.mkv

Removes the compression and resolves the issue. At least for me, this much quicker then running through a complete conversion in Handbrake.

Cool, and just for the record.....

If not using Transcoding, then note that this is NOT a Plex issue, but a Samsung issue

Removing the compression can't be the issue because all of my mkv movie files have the compression, but it seems only 2 or 3 of them come up with the black screen issue. I have confirmed that the TV is able to play them directly from a USB device. Yet, the movies will not play when using the PLEX app. I have confirmed the problem with the Samsung PLEX app is because of this - Starting with v5.9.0 mkvmerge writes two new elements that have recently been added to the Matroska specification: CueDuration and CueRelativePosition. Link to the FAQ below.

Perhaps it's coincidence, but I had 4 movies with the problem compression and these problems have been solved thanks to mux again

Exactly what happened to me as well. Thanks, all! And now I see MKVToolnix has the same troubleshooting tip.

mkvmerge -o test.mkv --engage no_cue_duration,no_cue_relative_position broken_file.mkv
mv broken_file.mkv old.mkv
mv test.mkv good_file.mkv

Works!

Now I just need to find a version of mkvmerge for my Synology and hook it into the post section of sabnzbd to automatically fix all the new mkv's.

I too can confirm that this fix works for me with several files.

It is strange that they will play fine via USB but not through plex or all share.

So is this going to be fixed in the next version of mkvmerge or will this become necessary for more and more files moving forward?

I have the same problem too. Files just stay black on PLEX. mkvmerge doesn't work.

With some newer mkv files I'm getting nothing but a black screen also. I just tried playing one of those files with the old beta version, and I got the same black screen, so it isn't just the newest plex app. I tried putting that file on a USB stick into my D8000 and it played fine, so it isn't a Samsung problem.

Same issues here!! Black screen only on my Samsung TV - but works fine my Apple TV upstairs. If I "Force Local Transcoding" in the Samsung client settings the MKV's work but are prone to stuttering every now and again even with all the buffers set high.

Please help investigate -Old MKV's I have watched in the past with no issues now will not play at all (Black Screen) I might try reverting back to previous releases of both the Samasung client (if possible) and the server (running on WHS2011).

The problem (and the fix) is described in a post above. It's because people start adding compressed headers to their MKVs and the Samsung can deal with that when streaming content.
We can not add new codecs and such things to your device, it either supports it or not. What we offer is server side transcoding, if it stutters, your server isn't fast enough.

Have you checked if your answer might be in the User Manual?

I only have a basic layman's understanding of what codecs are, what transcoding is, and this new way that compression headers are being used in mkv files. But prior to this new issue, I was of the understanding that if the Samsung device could play a file, then Plex could play it. That's where I'm confused. Was I wrong?

Also, as an alternative fix to this issue, would turning on Transcoding, just a little (not sure what those 'little' settings would be) for everything be a possible fix? Would video quality suffer from that fix?

You are partially right. The difference is, it will play compressed headers from a USB stick/harddrive, but not when it is streamed over a network.
Turning on transcoding will tell the server to check if the file it is about to play can be handled by the device.
For that to work we send the capabilities to the server and the server can then work out if it needs to transcode something.
With the quality setting to 12, you should see little or no quality loss. But transcoding is harder on the server, it needs to work harder, and NAS devices are too slow most of the time.

Have you checked if your answer might be in the User Manual?

Summery:

To fix MKV files, use MKVToolNix with the following parameters:

mkvmerge -o output.mkv –compression 1:none --engage no_cue_duration,no_cue_relative_position input.mkv

Only other problem might be profile levels, as found here

Though is my thoughts only, but with the traffic in this thread, maybe we should change subject of this thread, and make it pinned ? (Orca & HD1080)

While danes fix can work, its a pain. After reading Orca's last post it sounds like If our files are on a PC server, we should just turn on transcoding at 12. Maybe a future release could somehow detect the issue and prompt us to turn on transcoding automatically? Is that possible?

I agree that the various fixes should be made clear, and the this thread could go sticky.

Even better, the PMS should in a version in the NEAR future support the new options of MKV, but when that is said.....Since Plex is a fork of XBMC, and that also has the problem, my guess is that we have to wait for them to fix the problem.....

again.....Not a Plex Samsung Client problem, IMHO, but a backend problem, or ?
