4k hevc media that was direct playing is now automatically transcoding to 1080p after update

Responded to your thread. Your failure is not related to the interlaced video issue for Live TV and a fix for your reported issue is being produced and will be released shortly

What thread are you referring to @sa2000 – what about my issue? I reported it here before @BigWheel closed it, we are pushing almost a month now, where I can’t see ANY 4k content… (again, all this 4k content was FINE before these updates, and now everything transcodes to 1080p)

Here’s my thread: FIRESTICK 4k "4k playback is not supported on this device" for LOCAL MEDIA!

Would sincerely appreciate the dev team focusing on the CORE of the Plex player, and not adding other things like ā€œLive TVā€, or at least add it in two separate branches/versions, or split the player all together, most of the recent updates it seems is ā€œNewā€ functionality being added that breaks older things.

For example, I reported external subtitles on a file forcing a transcode of a h264 file, and the workaround being that I have to MANUALLY DISABLE subtitltes BEFORE starting a file, and THEN enable them in the player for it to work, that bug has been there for a year, with no sight of it even being acknowledged.

Anyways, would appreciate this 4k thing fixes asap, or at least a notice posted saying you are aware in situation X, Y, Z, so we arent left in the dark… especially as Plex Pass customers that have supported you for years.

Thanks!

That’s crazy talk. Obviously Tidal is a more valuable and user requested feature than simple core functionality like direct streaming UHD content.

Here’s the ironic part to all of this. I was a Plexpass member for years!!! Not because of the features that come with Plexpass. I never used one. It was more so the fact I wanted to support the Dev team because I do love the basic streaming aspects of it and also the way it’s presented. I only cancelled when money got a little tight. Got over that and reupped for a year and then two days laters this ā– ā– ā– ā–  happened. Like come on fellas. I don’t give a rats ass about any of these ā€œnewā€ features they add. Live TV? Why? Who even uses that with so many streaming options. Tidal? Umm…okay. Again countless other better music options out there. Plex movies? I have my own thank you. All I want is for Plex to do what it was originally made to do. Stream my content from my server to my TV. And if it’s made to direct play (like I make sure all my content is because transcoding is stupid) work as intended. And when it’s works perfectly before, then you push out an update that breaks it, freaking fix it man. It’s been 20 days. I would have been cool with them rolling back to the previous version automatically. But instead I had to do that myself. While not hard it did take time and I’m sure not everyone can easily do it themselves. So while I fixed my problem they are screwed. The worst part you ask? No acknowledgement from anyone about any of this from somebody at Plex. This isn’t a small little issue someone is crying about. I get it. The internet is stupid and message boards bring out the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  in everyone. But this bug legitimately broke a huge part of your app. So this bitching is very justified.

I don’t know what you guys are complaining about Tidal for. Tidal is AWESOME! In fact I’ve loaded it on my refrigerator, my microwave, and my toaster. if you haven’t done that you guys are definitely missing out.

Version 7.29.1 was just released… 4K problem fixed?

How do you get amazon firestick to force an update, it doesnt have anything like ā€œGoogle Play storeā€ where I can go and click ā€œUPDATE ALL APPSā€ ? My fire stick is still on 7.27

You can’t. the only way to test this is to sideload it. i use this app (android only) and it is fantastic:

Easy Fire TV

You can also use downloader on the stick, but it’s a bit tougher to navigate w/ the remote:

Downloader

I don’t see that the changelog lists any updates related to these issues though, so might not be worth the time…note that you will need to uninstall the store version and replace it with the one you download from the plex forums, under ā€œAmazon Fire OS Devicesā€.

Thanks for testing, because the changelog is not transparent again here:

**FIXES:**

* Player: ensure recommended H264 profile is set to what the device supports.

@sa2000 : How a wrong H264 profile can affect H265 playback? I also set that manually back to 5.2 on V7.28 without any luck.

Still stuck at 7.28. I have been checking for updates on all my firesticks every evening for the last few days and no update for me yet.

Amazon is slow to roll out apps…

Can you post a link to download this update?

Stable versions can be found in our release announcement. Plex for Android

A new beta with more fixes also just came out. Release Announcements - Android TV beta

Thanks!

That new beta 7.30 crashes for me on startup. On a fire stick 4K

Did you sideload the correct version?

Crashes as soon at it starts… blank screen, back to FS home screen…

yes.

edit: removed the sass in my original reply.

Haha. No problem. People have installed the wrong version so I had to ask.
