A New Experimental Plex Front End

I’m sure you tried this but… Settings → service selection and select your server

Yes, I know, but it’s not working somehow.
So far, I’ve restarted the Apple TV, rebuilt my server, reclaimed the server, and relinked it several times. It just isn’t working.

@clinteastwurst please file a bug at the tracker for genus, and give me all the info you can. This hasn’t been reported so it’s a new thing, or might be unique to your setup.

Give me all the details of your:

AppleTV (what generation, etc)
PMS (what version, what platform its running on, is it remote or local, etc)

Once I have that I can start looking into the problem.

@chrisjdavis Sorry, I don’t have a GitHub account. Here is some of the information you requested…

Apple TV 4K 3rd generation / tvOS 26.3
PMS version 1.43.0.10492 / remote streaming

create an account, its free. I don’t do user support here, its not doable unfortunately.

Do you have a timeline on when you plan to release this? It looks like your TestFlight beta is full.

I don’t have a timeline at the moment, basically “when it’s done”. I do have a definition of done, so that’s something at least! I am close, but not there yet. I upped the number of invites so you should be able to join now.

So bad news. I had to sell my personal computer to deal with some issues that only money can solve, since my employer had to reduce my pay substantially. Until I can figure out a new job (not likely) or a way to make up at least some of the cash, Genus and all my other apps, are on hold. I had hoped some kind folks would step up and help support dev, so I could make all the apps free, but that didn’t happen, so yeah.

Frigging sucks, since I was enjoying building Genus, the Genus desktop App and had started outlining the pro version of Genus that would support more formats via direct play. Not to mention my apple music replacement app and like 4 others I was actively working on.

Once I find a way to get another 2-3k a month in the door to keep us above water, I should be able to get back to Genus, and if that happens I’ll update here again.

Again sorry to get people excited and then have to pause. Not what I wanted. At all.

I’ll be an outlier here in saying that you should never be afraid of asking for a fee to keep your projects alive. I live paycheck to paycheck and don’t like having subscriptions but despite my inner monologue telling me that open-source and free is the way it should be, I know deep down that that’s just not how it works all the time.

I purchased Plezy for both Android and iOS knowing full well that AppleTV was not covered. I need you to know that ANY and all development for AppleTV is appreciated, and I say this as a Roku user in my home. I think you need to understand that Plex dev’s (within Plex Inc.) can no longer be trusted with their own apps, given how so much of it is faulty, and if you have to admit that you need to actually put a price on your work, just do it.

Right now, I think ALL Plex users can benefit from more refined implementations of Plex UI’s, even if the apps you and other devs create are limited to only what you can add to it. I hope to see something that would challenge PlexAmp given how it was said that PlexAmp won’t be ported to TV platforms at all. The more options, the merrier.

Thanks for commenting. I’m not averse to asking for a fee, and my plan has always been to sell the apps for a modest price. I don’t do subscriptions, but a decent one time fee is okay by me. I was just saying if people actually showed up and supported indie devs through patronage, we could afford to build cool stuff and release it for free so more people could have access to it.

Unfortunately either way it doesn’t matter at the moment since Genus isn’t ready for release right now even if I wanted to charge for it. There is about another 20 hours of work before I can even think of releasing it and I can’t do it given the current state of affairs.

Okay things have evened out, so I am back to working on Genus. Hoping to have the v1.0 in to Apple for approval in the next week. We’ll see how it goes.

Also, uh… I have started work on a companion for it.

Literally a week old, so no promises, but it’s actually working and coming together. So who knows.

@chrisjdavis - Didn’tt think that Genus would be back, so I Stopped Testing, and now the Beta is FULL :frowning:

I upped the cap to 20 and got things working again, so you should be able to access the latest beta now.

I’m in! Thanks.

@chrisjdavis does the new[er] version work with a secure connection? I remember that this was something that needed to be disabled to get it to work.

Also checking in how’s the  submission going for the new release to start up testing again.

  • Gracias

I don’t have any bug reports about things not working with a secure connection, so no idea! If you are having that issue open a ticket please at github and I will look into it. As for Apple, there is a new beta for testing, it was approved last week I believe. Still working through getting them to approve for sale.

Dun, done. Sorry for the delay, but it’s up #27. LMK if you need anything else.

Fixed it just now, thanks for the report.

Okay, I spent the last few days on a polish pass and fixing some persistent bugs. I am hoping to submit to Apple for final listing on the App Store by the end of the week. This is a 1.0 and it isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty great IMO.

If people actually buy it, and I make enough rev from it, I will be able to make it even better. the biggest changes are adding the ultra blur to the app in strategic places, since I realized that in my app, since it uses Liquid Glass, the blur affects the entire UI and looks pretty great.

And I as you can see we are back to the top nav, since I discovered a nasty bug with the newer menu style that made it unusable for now. To still support folks with tons of libraries, we have the new “Libraries View”:

You can have as many Libraries as you want, etc. The genres are specific to the selected library.

I also rewrote quite a few things so this is faster and leaner, and standardizes on tvOS 18 as the minimum. Okay that’s about it for now.

I really appreciate the feedback and testing that everyone has put in while I have been building this out.

Cheers!

Okay friends, Genus is “In Review” for the App Store. Hopefully it passes. This is definitely a 1.0, but it is smooth and, in my opinion, the most beautiful app for Plex. There is solid, but limited MKV support (chapters for MKVs don’t work well with AVPlayer), but I will be improving that over time, so hopefully folks will support me.

$14.99 USD, one time purchase. Crazy that we are finally here.
