Add Discover to managed users

The issue here is that Plex is unlikely to focus on making the Discover feature more intuitive for Managed Users and Home profiles due to the atrociously short sited response from many users on this forum.

Despite Discover being an absolutely amazing feature and it’s Other Ways To Watch feature getting deserved universal praise from the tech world, some here wanted to shout loud enough for the whole planet to know that they were upset Plex weren’t working on their preferred feature (whatever that may be).

A classic case of “We didn’t ask for this!” when they should remember we didn’t ask for music in cars neither but hey, aren’t we all glad a manufacturer went ahead and did it anyway.

I’ve followed these directions to a tee, but at the last step the “Save Changes” button is always greyed out. Any idea what I might be missing?

Ahh, never mind. I just had to select the first option in the drop-down, then select the edited version again. THEN click Save Changes

Plex is shooting themselves in the foot.

So many users asking for a simple feature that would boost Plex over its competitors, but Plex still needs to “think about it a little more”. Sure, keep thinking about it so your competitors have time to implement it themselves and give us one more reason to switch (like when Jellyfin decided to include hardware encoding in their free tier).

Regarding the linked thread by the Plex Employee, users will always complain, let them complain because you’re giving them too much, not because you deny listening to them —especially if what they are asking for will increase your revenue.

Just now I have purchased a lifetime membership of Plex’s major competitor. The decision in my family was initially to get a Plex Lifetime Pass, but after reading this thread I have decided that Plex isn’t listening to its users anymore. That’s not the kind of company that I want to support. I hope you can come to your senses; I’d really prefer to be back in the Plex team.

Mmh we can choose which librairie to share with our home users, that is our responsability to choose right for them.

Giving us the possibility to choose if we give them acces to Discover would be our responsability too.

Isn’t simple?

I don’t see what is difficult here… Do you have a more concrete explanation for what it is held like this?:blush:

If the issue is not being able to control what might be returned from an external source, then make it optional, like many of the other preferences on Managed Users (e.g. Live TV), so it can be disabled for those accounts where that would be desired, and enabled on others.

@McWanke is there an update on this? You mentioned last November that there were internal discussions regarding this subject. Has there been any progress on that front?

+1 for this feature because it’s very disappointing not having “Discover” and “More Ways to Watch” available on the managed user accounts.

In the response from the Plex Employee above I really don’t understand the line… “Managed users are a tough group for us…” This reads like Plex are managing these users but I assumed this was my job as the admin.

I can appreciate it would be very difficult to filter content in Discover based on ratings classifications however that’s not really a valid reason for not providing an on/off switch and giving the admin control over their users.

In my opinion, if this is a business decision by Plex to potentially sell more Plex Passes that would make a lot more sense than anything else I’ve read above.

Why not just convert your Manage Users to Regular Users (you control the account credentials) and make them part of your Plex Home?

Doesn’t that just do what you are asking: give them all the things a regular user account has? Or, what am I missing?

I am adding a +1. I am tech savvy. My family not so much. I just got an HDHomeRun flex and setup PLEX yesterday. I barely got any sleep the last 24 hours, maybe 4 if lucky because I have had so much fun learning how to you PLEX and get comfortable using it, so I can teach my less tech savvy family how to use.

The Discovery is amazing in a way that from the Admin account with discover enasbled, let’s say someone wants to watch “Stranger Things” and they are in PLEX and cant remember if it’s Hulu, or Netflix, or Amazon etc…, If you search “Stranger Things” in the admin profile, it shows you what online service it on, and you click on it, and PLEX will switch to that other app on Apple TV automatically and take you right to the show, Well for most things. This works with Amazon Prime, and Netflix and a few other things but if you want to search for “Frasier” to find the reboot that is on Paramount Plus, the discover works and shows you that Frasier is on Paramount Plus and will switch to Apple TV app but will not navigate you to Frasier show home. My daughter wanted to watch Spongbob and was trying to show her how to search for SpongeBob, if you select Amazon Prime, it takes you to the show, but again with Paramount Plus through Apple TV app it does not.

This to me is a VERY KEY FEATURE for PLEX. And makes using one app to find most all the streaming shows you want to see, from one program, and get to it. That is a KILLER FEATURE. To block it from Managed is stupid.

I like the Manage access feature and would LOVE to see the Discover option added to the managed accounts if I want to have the ability to “Manage” account access. Right now really the only thing you can turn or or off with the managed access is allow or disallow live TV, Movies and Shows and music.

A KEY FEATURE to me for the managed accounts is allowing others in your family to be able to set what Live channels they want to add to their favorites. That is the limit to the customization you can to for managing managed accounts for live TV.

My family has agreed to give this a few weeks to see how they like it, but I have a feeling I am either going to return my HDHomeRun and get my money back nad cancel my PLEX pass, or find a way to configure Docker on my Terra-Master MAS to use the Channels app that I hear so much great things about. As an installable option to the Channels Sserver is not avaible to Terra-master. I but this NAS over a year go mainly for photo storage and backup and love being able use it for a DVR.

PLEX, Please consider this. this entire for me and my family is a do or die feature and I have a feeling PLEX is going to lose my money and support.

I am happy to see how active PLEX is in in adding new features and fixing bugs, and hope that the powers to be will see there is a good reason to allow managed accounts to discover your online services. It’s a killer feature for Apple TV and probably Android an and maybe ROKU as well.

Thank you PLEX for this consideration.

Same issue here. I’ve added two managed accounts for my kids. Then I’ve discovered that with these accounts I cannot search any content at all, not even with the search edit text box. WTF! I don’t get the point. Every streaming service has kids accounts with the possibility of search for new content.

I don’t get why the issue here is the age related content. If I disable restrictions for managed user I cannot search for content with it neither. What is this pile of ■■■■?

There must be some misunderstanding here. Managed accounts can search without issues. Only Discover is not available.

I think discover should be too, obviously. But, i can’t even search and i thought this was related

This is for a minor restricted managed account. Happens the same when managed account is not age restricted

Should i start other issue?

I can confirm that it’s NOT the case, I’m trying to setup a managed account for a friend so that he doesn’t have to create a full account and when I switch to his managed account I can’t search for new content to have his own watchlist.

Well I can confirm that all managed users in my Home can search content without issues.

Hi, as a plexpass user i would love to see this feature in the near future if possible too !

+1 how has it been 2 years and this issue is not resolved? I see other people saying it is possible for managed users to search for content but this has not been my experience at all. Is it really that difficult to just make it a toggle to allow/not allow managed users to use this feature?

Completely agree with jack’s assessment here

Absolutely insane this still hasn’t been resolved.

just came here to say i’m also interested in Discover for Managed Users.
